One of your photos is captioned, "Even though the D&H line is long gone this writing on a wall next to the row marks the day conrail came to rip out the penn div. at Lanesboro, PA..."

Are you sure that you don't mean Guilford? I don't think Conrail would have any claim to the rails below Starucca.

Gas drilling expansion brings rail-related jobs to Carbondale
BY JAMES HAGGERTY (STAFF WRITER)
Published: July 16, 2009

The expansion of natural gas drilling in the region is bringing railroad-related jobs back to Carbondale.

Linde Corp., a regional utility and heavy construction contractor, recently agreed to lease 5.5 acres of former Delaware & Hudson Railroad property in the city, said Larry Malski, president of the Pennsylvania Northeast Regional Railroad Authority.

"The genesis of this was the natural gas industry," Mr. Malski said. "We've been trying to get something in Carbondale for quite a few years."

The rail authority acquired the property in 1985 and designated the acreage for bulk rail distribution in 2001, Mr. Malski said. It is located in the Business Park at Carbondale Yards.

Linde plans to use the site to transfer bulk shipments of gas-drilling materials, such as sand and pipes, to production sites, Mr. Malski said. Efforts to reach Linde were unsuccessful.

The firm will pay the authority based on shipment volumes and Mr. Malski said Linde will pave, fence and light the old rail yard, which dates to 1825.

The lease agreement was reached after representatives of the natural gas industry, which is active in Susquehanna County, approached Mr. Malski about setting up a rail facility to reduce shipment costs. The rail authority has connections to lines operated by Norfolk Southern Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway.

So a small part of the Penn Division lives on and the long abandoned Carbondale yard will soon see trains again.

Thats great news ! Ive decided to model the D&H mainline . It will start at Binghamton Yard curve to cooperstown , to Unidilla , and finally Harpersville . I may add a small version of carbondale yard on the otther end of the layout after harpersville .

Delaware Lackawanna. Batten Kill is no where near the Penn Division, friend.

Ok I'm a little confused by this one. I've lived in the area for 28 years and the order south to north is Binghamton, Harpersville, Unadilla and then Cooperstown Junction before you cut off to Cooperstown (on CCV built tracks and Delaware Otsego owned after 1970). And to get to Cooperstown Junction you have to run right through Oneonta a major yard.

It's your layout you can certainly do what you want but I see no logical reason to rearrange the geographical order of the towns to get what you want. So assuming you want to model this section of the A&S division and Carbondale why not got Carbondale, Binghamton Yard, Harpersville, Unadilla and end at Oneonta? Or if you want to blow past Oneonta, fine, end at Cooperstown.

I see this thread is pretty old, but I have a website that was dedicated to the creation of a rail trail on the old Penn Division from Nineveh Junction to the PA state line. Unfortunately, the project never gained traction. Neighbors objected to hikers in their back yards - you know, they would all be rapists or some such nonsense. A snow mobile group/ATV group now owns the right of way, and it looks like the gas drilling companies will be using it as well - as they are already doing on the Pennsylvania side of the state line.

In any case, I've found some interesting photos over the years and have some of them on the site. I may redo it and turn it into a Penn Division site with larger images. The Central Hotel photos may be of interest to anyone familiar with the area. I live just up the hill from the hotel.

I lived here back when the Penn Division was still operating and have some photos of the last days of operation.

I have walked the Penn Division from Simpson all the way up to the NY border. From there at the time the trail dies off, but that was before I had better mapping tools. Probably the most northern item I photographed was the Cascade Wye.

Oh I should mention, my website changed and my old sit no longer works.

I have a lot of pictures of the Penn Division. I do hope to see the NY section this year before any real construction happens.
