I have on my lap the 2003 official South Carolina Transportation Map, which shows railways as well as highways (and waterways and airports) in the Palmetto State.
I will be spending a few days in Charleston, SC next week. I will be coming down Interstate 95 out of Virginia and across North Carolina. I'll be getting off 95 in Florence and heading down US 52 from there to Charleston.
For the majority of its course from Florence to Charleston, US 52 appears to run within sight of the CSX line between those two cities, although road and rails diverge at Kingstree, reconverging at St. Stephen (25 miles south of Kingstree via 52). How active is this line? It'd be cool to drive alongside a Charleston-bound consist or two.
