I don't think I've seen this kind of tank car, so i'm wondering do they use tank cars to transport compressed natural gas?

I believe the hazmat card for CNG is 1971

To my knowledge, no. CNG has such a low energy content, it's not economically feasible to ship by rail. BN experimented with NG (CNG, I believe) in the early 80s and a purified LNG product in the early 90s. The LNG fuel tenders were modified tank cars capable of maintaining the methane at the required temperature (~ minus 260f) for an extended time period.
