LETTER: Ulster County Executive Michael Hein must feel guilty
POSTED: 02/09/18

Dear Editor:

I can see by his actions that Ulster County Executive Michael Hein is feeling guilty and worried about destroying our county’s history and disregarding the wishes of the majority of county residents by removing the railroad tracks alongside the Ashokan Reservoir and building a walking trail.

He could have saved a ton of money by putting a walking trail next to the tracks. His guilt has led to putting up fences, taking away our access to the property and our boats, and he has armed guards to protect the workers.

What is he afraid of?

I do not know why he thinks that taking away an income to the county and replacing it with a drain on the county budget is a good thing. He talks about bringing tourist dollars into the county and then throws them away.

Hein and all those who voted to remove our railroad and destroy our history should be voted out of office. They surely do not have the interest of the county and its residents at heart .

When is the next county election? Is it in November? I hope some U&D supporters will be running - especially if CMRR could get business (which means jobs) for the area... Some of the idiots running the county thinks rail trails equals jobs...
The fences, etc. apparently are being required by the City of New York / DEP as explained on the City's webpage: "Attention Ashokan Reservoir Anglers

DEP is collaborating with Ulster County to construct the Ashokan Rail Trail on the former railway corridor that runs along the northern shore of Ashokan Reservoir.

Preliminary work on the trail, including the removal of old rail infrastructure and hazard trees, began this winter and will continue through May. DEP and Ulster County have carefully outlined a plan to maintain some access for shore fishermen and boat owners while the project is ongoing.

We encourage all anglers to pay careful attention to the signs, temporary fences and other information that outline the approved walking paths and the areas that are off limits." http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/recreation/index.shtml

I see the present mayor of Kingston Steve Noble, and the Ulster County Chamber of Commerce are participating in CMRR events. Is this a new attitude from organizations? (with the notable exception of the county government)

We went to them in person. Generally money talks and BS walks, what sells for cash money gets no names attached to it and once it's gone it's gone.

Oh well, going to be that much worse if they should be forced to replace it.

They refused the sale on what grounds? What is the name of the company that is/was holding the material?

Probably not. A private business can pick and choose with whom it does business and need not explain its reasoning. Conspiracies in restraint of trade, which is what you are probably thinking of, are illegal between competitors in activities such as price fixing, division of markets, etc.

That is true, except it does make you wonder, what’s in it for this scrap yard company if they don’t sell material to the CMRR?

Thursday, June 14th

Earl Pardini, Brian VanKirk, John Marino and Tom Whyte tamped and spiked the last of the ties inserted in May, and helped Scott Symans unload Viscose No. 6.

Saturday June 16th

On Saturday, June 16th the CMRR ran its annual Steam Train with Viscose No. 6 from Westbrook Lane to the JR crossing. There was great music on the train:

Many thanks to the CMRR crew who made this happen: Earl Pardini, Engineer, Tony Bocchino, Conductor, Karl Wick, Conductor, and John Marino, Russ Hallock, Al Schoessow, Ernie Klopping and Joe Wolff, flagmen. Many thanks to Peter Fluchere, Pat Smalley and Marcia Roosa in the ticket booth, and to our Event Coordinator, Rob Gaston.

Well, it's the landlord interfering with the legal business of the tenant. Also, bet they didn't get the best price for scrapping the rails since they couldn't sell them to the best customer. And it shows bias in the government officials that should probably have recused themselves over railroad and railtrail issues.

Just document the heck out of the interaction with the salvage company. I don't suppose anybody wants to go on the record. Maybe there is a FOIA request that could be made, lol

They sell it as processed scrap, high quality material and it goes to a furnace somewhere, is what's in it for them. Every time I've bought out of the scrap yard I had to pay about double what they pay for the material based on the weight.
