On July 21, 2016, the CMRR removed its equipment from Shokan by rail. The equipment consisted of the CMRR crane and tender, and a privately held caboose. CMRR 42 and work flat 201 were sent up from Kingston for the move, and reached Shokan on July 20, 2016. The photos below by William Sternitzke chronicle the move in great detail.

The next day after bringing the Shokan equipment to West Hurley, the train picked up three cars in the siding there to bring down the hill towards Kingston. More photos from William Sternitke:

As noted in the picture captions, the cleanup train was the first train out to where the crane and stuff was since 1976.

You could speeder all the way to the missing bridge, though, and they probably could have restored the tracks for service up to say within 100 yards of that given a couple more years to work.

Shokan is about milepost K 16.2. Cornell Street is about MP K 3.0. Prior to 2011 speeders were able to cover the section beyond Shokan to Phoenicia to MP K 28.8, although they had to be walked over the Butternut Cove washout. After 2011 the Boiceville bridge washout at 21.3 and the land slumping at 23.3 made a continuous trip impossible.

The cleanup train could have run to Butternut Cove, MP 18.6, if there was a reason to. Butternut Cove, rather than the Boiceveile Trestle or 23.3 was what kept the CMRR from transferring equipment from Kingston to Phoenicia, until hurricane Irene struck in 2011.

The crane and its tender went to Butternut Cove at MP 18.57 about 10 years ago. Our work train could go there today if it had permission. Beyond that would not be possible until Butternut cove was repaired. EH

This weekend will be the last time to see steam operating out of Mt. Tremper. Since the operating agreement in Mt. Tremper expires in November, your chance to see trains along the scenic portion of the Esopus will soon come to an end. Buy your tickets now, support the cause.
