If autocompanies continue to move overseas. We will start to see autorack trains become less and less. Before companies stop making autoracks all together.Scary

well not sure of what auto companies are moving overseas, most already have plants in different countries. Hell they make some better driving/looking cars over there then here.

But if they were to get up and leave the us, the cars have to come back here by boat and how would they get around the country if no autoracks were available anymore?

Not to mention, some foreign companies, Honda in particular, make plenty of cars HERE.

Honda is noteworthy in that they actually ship cars from here TO Japan.

No, the auto-hauling business isn't going away. The routes may change, with manufacturing relocation; but as long as people buy cars someone's going to have to ship them.

Go to Port Newark (well, use Live Local for the Bird's Eye View).
Lots of import vehicles come in there (modelers - remember to cover the hoods & trunks with white plastic sheets), and they go out to the country via Autoracks (and lots of them).
These guys are the key players down there.

Remember, just because it is built overseas does not mean it does not have some distance to travel when it gets to shore. If 3000 vehicles need to get from the west coast to the east coast, the most economical way to do so is by rail. The average auto hauling truck carries approximately 18 cars? That would require 167 trucks to move. By rail this would be two AC4400s or a trio of SD40-2s with a decent length of autoracks in tow.

Autoracks are not going anywhere. As others have pointed out, there are plenty of companies (including honda, Toyota, Subaru and Hyundai) building cars in the US and even imports still need to travel by train. When they arrive at ports on the coast, they still need to get all over the country. That is done in most cases by rail.
