Rentals are a lot cheaper in the off season than in the summer, where rents go sky high......

Theres not too many apartment complexes in walking distance to the trains...two I can think of are in Long Branch and in Matawan. Long branch is about a half mile walk, Matawan, is about a mile and a half or so.

Mass transit isn't real useful down this neck of the woods - there are some bus routes, but there are only so many "downtowns" that the busses serve, where most businesses are along the major roads

Red Bank blows Manayunk away. Much bigger town, more to do, plus the Jersey Shore.

There are also houses/parts of houses to rent near LB station. Just out of college, I had a girlfriend that rented the 1st floor of a house within a block of LB station. Met her on the train commuting to and from NYC at the engine change at S Amboy (buying that 6 pack of cold beer on a ridiculously hot summer day paid off). NJT, the way to go!
