I recently took a trip to Boston on the Acela. Just after Providence on the eastbound side of the NEC tracks there is yard trackage that has a ladder on each end and is about 6 tracks. It looks like a commuter staging yard, but it is not connected to any tracks, Both yard ladders dead end???

What is this track used for???

You're talking north/east of downtown Providence, right? That will be the new layup yard for MBTA commuter equipment that's currently stored at East Junction in South Attleboro. It's not yet in service, obviously.
