From the appearance of the crankcase, which looks like unpainted stainless steel, I would suspect it might be one of the special non-magnetic engines built for the NATO navies for use in wooden minesweepers. I saw one just like it many years ago at the USCG yard in Maryland, and I believe it had a similar base and reduction gear.

If it is a stainless steel engine, you can leave it out on the front lawn and it will look great many years from now. This simplifies the storage problem considerably!
