In a nutshell, F40C's 611 and 614 were retained, and continue to be stored serviceable by Metra, while the rest were sold to Helm, which then leased them to KCS. Meanwhile, a rather extensive discussion about the F40C's can be found scattered about on the older pages of this forum, but the links below should prove to be particularly relevant to your question...

F40C's 600-609, 612 and 613 were sold to Helm Leasing and, at the time, were expected to see service on the Kansas City Southern while that road awaited the arrival of its new SD70ACe locomotives. They were never used there and today sit at Mid-America Railcar in Kansas City, Mo., and at a Helm facility near St. Louis, awaiting disposition. Since they are essentially unmarketable as operating locomotives, I suspect they'll be stripped for parts (inside, they're basically SD40's) before too long.

I'm surprised MMA hasn't bought them for the Poland Program.
