I don't think this photo is correctly dated, if that's the one making you wonder if she was returned to service later in 1987. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1371217" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I say that because #3002 and #3004 both were wrecked in...

I can't add much except to say that she wasn't one of the two winter casualties from February 1987 derailments. Those were the 3002 and 3004. She was stored because of serious mechanical issues and listed for sale according to the January 1988 Trains article about the railroad. The roster in the art...

Noticed the F40s for sale are the final 1987 series. Of the entire F40 fleet (1976-87), why were the lower 200 series favored for NPCU conversion? Older and a lot more miles. Some of the oldest surpassed the 3.5 million mile mark before retirement as powered locomotives. With a limited market for h...

If Via Rail can keep rolling with mid 1950's rolling stock that safely crosses the continent in comfort and style, I find it difficult to believe that this car's mainline days just have to end now. VIA, as with Union Pacific, BNSF, and even Metra, has a FLEET of cars built before 1971. Amtrak is do...

Altoonaworks says that powering the train when disconnected from the F units is part of the reason why they lug around the standalone HEP car, but also that the "F units HEP has caused trouble in the past".

At last, someone with all the answers. From your link: "Previous HEP generators replaced with smaller units and rooftop piping was modified" So, as I suspect, they are used for some function other than keeping tootsies cool back in the train. The first car after the consist is a HEP car. ...

Used MP15's frequently go for 250k at auction, brand new AC motored GE's and EMD's for freight service start at about 2 million a pop, new environmentally friendly switchers go from anything just below a million dollars to $1.5 million or more, etc. $175,000 hasn't bought new passenger power since t...

Are the tracks along Railroad St. in Rome still active? If so, there's a short stretch there shared with the street, sharing a truss bridge over water.

Length wise it's not worth mentioning, but the fact that it's sharing the roadway across a bridge makes it stand out.

The old milepost markers (which I believe were the originals) seem to have disappeared around here, replaced with modern signs. :(

Several line sales have been announced. Anyone heard any rumors about this line? Might not take much longer to hear what its immediate fate will be.

Is traffic climbing back upwards, or will these be used to retire more of what little is left of their one time fleet of SD40/SD45's and derivatives?

Not too long ago, it sounded like traffic levels didn't warrant buying additional new SD70ACe's.

Of 28 SD60's, 12 went to CSX and 16 went to Norfolk Southern at the split. With the original prototype later joining the CSX roster in 2000, that gave them 13 out of 28 (10 production examples and all three demos). http://conrailphotos.thecrhs.org/?q=ConrailSurvivors/Locomotives/EMD/SD60" oncli...
