Re: Northeast Regional 188 - Accident In Philadelphia

Could they run the Florida trains up the old Reading, behind diesels? I don't know the specific track layouts, but get on the RDG in Philly, get off at Woodburn, take the freight line into Morrisville, then over the bridge into Trenton? You would need diesels (with HEP) between Woodburn and Morrisvi...

As early as 1964, the French had a locomotive, the 40100 class, that would run on four different voltage and frequency combinations. They were 1,500 and 3,000 VDC, 15,000 VAC at 16 2/3 cycles, and 25,000 VAC at 50 cycles. These units had four pantographs, one for each power supply, but (for sake of ...

Not to get too far off topic, but NY City has an older 'product' tanker for sale. IIRC correctly from the online article a month or so ago, it is 300 odd feet long, was built in the '60s and has Cooper-Bessemer diesels. We all know that the FDL is a C-B design; looks like the City has some loyalty t...

The Port Authority just put out a bid package for the construction and delivery of two carfloats. While I still think my scaled-up version of 'Las Plumas' is a good alternative, it looks like they have made the decision to go with conventional, albeit longer, carfloats. I took a good look at the dra...

I heard the horn on the video. I was making reference to the un-informed media frequently referring to engineers as conductors, and horns as whistles. I also saw the crossing GATES referred to as arms. The media needs educating, that's all.

I just saw, online, that service has been resumed and no charges have been filed against the truck driver. There were also no serious injuries. But once again, the media has some of the nomenclature wrong. Two reports gave both the truck drivers name, and the conductors name. I imagine the conductor...

The tapered nose, specifically designed to deflect things on the track, didn't work in CA a few days ago, when the train hit the pickup and trailer. Three cars on their sides; so far no fatalities.

Some of BandA's technical suggestions would mean that the railroad has to operate at restricted speed for much of it's length. Sensors on gates and inductive automobile sensors in the road would have to send a signal to a train quite a distance away to have it stop in time, while running at the pres...

I had a few other thoughts on this. For maneuverability, design and build a big double ended 'Las Plumas', with electric azimuthing drives (also known as Azipods) on each end. They could be powered by diesel gensets, but lets think Green. Since some time has to be spent at the dock at each end, unlo...

This just hit my local paper today, although I have been following this online. The newspaper article mentioned a ten BILLION dollar price tag for a proposed 4 mile tunnel. I agree with SecaucusJunction, that kind of money would be better spent on new Hudson River passenger tunnels. I'm a rail guy, ...

I work up that way from time to time, and the large industry right on Main Street has small signs saying SWM, for Spotswood Mill. I believe it used to be a Kimberly-Clark facility; no idea what they make there, though.

A pile of new ties in the woods? Can't be! The woodchucks would have taken them long ago for their gardens and other landscaping. You can't leave anything in the woods, locked or unlocked, or even alongside a road in New Jersey. Or is it the NEW SOUTH BRONX?

I've only see one broken flange in my lifetime, and that was on a cast iron tender truck wheel on a steam locomotive, 40 plus years ago. Cast iron wheels are, of course, outlawed now. I have seen plenty of sharp flanges, thin rims, hollow treads, flat spots, and welded wheels, though. Maybe my next ...

The PA belongs to Doyle; Ross is a steam guy and would never own a "dismal", his spelling, BTW
