Question - what is the official top speed on the mainline?
M-series (M-1 to M-9) have always been 80 mph, through M-1s were designed for at least 100 (1968 Budd
product literature).
Can do it too, been on one that made 102

The two M3 sets in Long Beach took a trip somewhere earlier this week. I'm guessing to Hillside for an inspection? Are there any other M3s on the railroad in standby mode? Lots of M3s standing by, some waiting for a return to service, others standing by for their trip to final Maspeth on their own ...

The tunnel under the East River was built decades ago - at 63rd St. 2 levels, one for subway, one for LIRR. Sadly, the LIRR level was not built tall enough, or from another view, it is what it is, but in the 90's LIRR chose to spec out double decker cars a few inches too tall for that tunnel. Now c...

Does anyone know what the replacement station will look like? (Or by a long shot, have a direct connection with the A train?) I believe I remember hearing something about the freight siding there being rebuilt, so maybe that has to do with this project. No connection to the IND-A, not a chance. Als...

I stopped by this morning and lo and behold, Nassau Tower is still standing. On the site of the former substation is a temporary construction trailer that wasn't there last week. Is the end near ? I don't know, but the lights are still on, so power hasn't been disconnected yet. I do believe water s...

I can attest to Number One; A crew was moving a pair of M1s loaded at the Holban ramp (trucks still on the cars) to Fresh Pond yard for interchange off the property. Not knowing where they were and missing the crossover to access Pond, they tried to pass under the Transit Authority bridge just west...

Thank you for sharing those pictures. I remember seeing pics of those cars rolling through Hicksville, along with the trucks in the gondolas. . While its clear the M1s were later torn apart and not reused (we'd see pics of them in use somewhere) Ive heard two stories that maybe you can confirm or pr...

Can a DE/DM run lite? Yes So is this move with the switcher due to there being no way to turn the engine at Greenport or Oyster Bay? Likely the reason yes, but it can also be low on fuel or disabled. Often times when making a move like this, they'll operate east from the DE, and west from the 1500

LIRR has no 'heritage units' of any official capacity. Period. Even the old Harold Protects are not, those are just two engines an appreciative boss had painted like that (and got chewed out for) aren't true heritage units.
Likely there never will be any either.
