Frazer shop access from Thorndale

When trains reverse from Thorndale to Frazer at the end of the day are the tracks set up signal wise and with the correct current of traffic so that a train can reverse to Frazer on the north track (guessing that might be track 4 based on PRR numbering convention, but I an not certain what is called...

Pans: front or back

Is there any difference as to which pantograph is raised on a dual pan engine? This was just a little oddity I noticed the other day, it seems the SEPTA push/pulls run with the front pan raised while my memory is Amtk uses the rear one. Now I realize they both will work, but is there any concerns wi...

Center door on some push-pull coaches?

Noticed some of the push-pull coaches have a center door. Sometimes is it just one in a train, occasionally 2 and one train yesterday had none. I have yet to ride the push-pull coaches. What was the reasoning for this design and the lack of many of them having this feature? Were these second hand ca...

Re: Names of the various yards and locations

Thanks for all the replies. The point I was trying to make is of most of the yards mentioned and the ones I have seen, are small, just a few tracks. SEPTA really lacks a large yard, Aurora Ill. comes to mind with a large yard, where Metra stores a large number of trains. I think most of the Metra Li...

Current equipment on the Cascades?

 by train2 ¦  Fri Apr 27, 2018 2:23 pm ¦  Forum: Amtrak ¦  Topic: Current equipment on the Cascades? ¦  Replies: 6 ¦  Views: 2634

What is the current equipment operating on the Cascades? I will be visiting in a couple of weeks. I was wondering is any F40 cab cars operate here, any F59s or is it all P42s now? What percentage of trains have those somewhat challenged looking cab cars? Is there a scheme to which end the cab cars a...

Thanks for the reply. One thing I have noticed about Septa is they have almost no yards at the ends of the lines. That is pretty unique. Think of most other commuter operations they have a yard at the end of very major line to store trains overnight. With the exception of W. Trenton and the Chestnut...

Names of the various yards and locations

In a few threads, here and on other forums, I see names given to certain yards. I am not up to speed on each by name. Where are each of the yards and what are they named? If they have peoples names associated with them it is harder to locate exactly where people are talking about as opposed to the y...

MN nose hatch and the tunnels

Reading all the discussion in other places about Amtrak needing to provide cab cars for its GE engines going into Grand Central, I was interested to know how that nose hatch on the MN works exactly. Does it have a ladder, fixed or rope type, to exit the engine? The hatch is fairly high from the grou...

Why did SEPTA bother with push-pulls?

Yesterday I was riding home on the Paoli line on an express made up of Silverliners and this thought crossed my mind: Why did SEPTA bother with push-pull trains? What did they do for SEPTA that the MU car fleet did not provide? Given that 90 plus percent of the rail operations are MU cars, I see the...

Flashing yellow strobe lights and max speed

Last week as I was waiting to board a train at 30th street I noticed yellow strobe lights at both ends of the platform at 30th street that were flashing. A light was present at both ends of each track, near the ends of the platforms. They all were constantly flashing and none seemed to cycle on and ...

I am not worried about riding at this point. Lets try it this way. I am standing on a platform of 30th Street facing east toward Suburban Station, what are the tracks from left to right by number and what trains arrive on each of these tracks?

Based on your description, the Thorndale trains, such as the Flyer, will always board on the northern most track, or against the wall in the station? I consider the north track of Septa to be the one closest to the side of the concourse that is nearest to Zoo/Jersey/NYC and not the Wilmington side. ...

30th street PM rush boarding patterns

During the afternoon rush hour at 30th street is there any predicability to what platform certain destination trains board if nothing unusual is taking place? I realize the two center tracks drop down and duck to the south. But I believe there are two tracks that head west. Of those two tracks is th...
