Does the siding at Nantes have derails? Were there two freights at this location the night of the accident, with the oil train on the main?

Since spent nuclear fuel is shipped in virtually indestructable steel casks, I dont think this is a fair comparison with crude oil trains. And besides, you wont see any 85 car spent nuclear fuel trains either.....though it is true Harry Reid wants no trains to Yucca Mountain....even if it is just on...

FRA says MM&A rail lines within the state of Maine are safe.

If Irving took over the MM&A, it would be a godsend. They have the financial resources, expertise, and access to shippers that no one else possesses. The largest refinery in Canada is in St John and owned by the Irving clan. Also one of the largest paper mills in Canada is located there and also...

Clearly CSX is trying to eliminate bottlenecks from Baltimore south, so by adding a second track through DC at Anacostia will help ease the flow of trains through DC. This includes the double tracking of the tunnel near the Capitol. Clearly, having a second track will make it easier to dispatch trai...

So finally, it is the use of the GE units that ended up biting the MM&A in the rear. If an EMD unit was in the lead, I am not sure they are as prone to fires and if the brake lever could have been removed.......

As long as there are promises made and eventually fulfilled to re-route the line around downtown it sounds like local officials are well aware that the traffic must resume in the interim for everyone's own good. The MM&A said they would consider rerouting their line around the town. One can not...

The MM&A did not meet the Canadian Govts fitness report, meaning they do not have enough insurance to cover a 'second' disaster. To me, this means their license to operate in Canada has been revoked. It may be a possibility that trains through Lac Megantic will never run again. There is really o...

The MM&A declared bankruptcy, listing assets of 50-100 million and liabilities of 1-10 million. This was done for both the Canadian and USA divisions of the railway. This is the best way for the organization to handle the dire situation they face.

The timeline is very short, from the point when the engineer was picked up by the taxi, when the fire was first noticed, the firemen arriving to extinguish the fire, and the train beginning to move on its own to Lac Megantic. I dont think there was time for anyone else to 'mess' with the train, othe...

As the overhead freight MM&A carries is rerouted to other lines, there is the potential that the shippers might be slow to return to the MM&A (assuming it survives and the line is eventually restored). If we pretended the wreck did not involve either oil, a town, or any deaths and injuries, ...

There is not an incredible amount of value to the MM&A based on oil traffic alone. Using the month of May's oil traffic, it only amounts to about 17.5 loads per day based on a six day operation (though the MM&A operates less than that). This oil is easily routed using other rail lines or by ...

There was both mechanical and human error here, hindsight is always 20-20 they say. They have been parking trains at Nantes for years and without any issues. There was the fire and then the probable fact that not enough hand brakes were engaged to prevent the train from moving. There is no certainty...

I think it is probably all over. MM&A will declare bankruptcy at some point when the pressure is simply too great. Irving will get East Millinocket to Brownville Junction, they have trackage rights already. The State of Maine will buy the Searsport branch and will probably designate Irving as th...

The loss of the oil train revenue would have serious consequences for the MM&A. It is quite possible that even if the railroad survived the initial assault of various legal attacks from the Province of Quebec, the town of Lac Megantic, the Canadian Government, and survivors, Irving may opt not t...
