Thanks, I think it might have been called Irondale in CNW's days, actually.

CNW yard in South Chicago

by dhaugh ¦  Tue Jul 17, 2007 3:22 pm ¦  Forum: Midwestern Railfan ¦  Topic: CNW yard in South Chicago ¦  Replies: 5 ¦  Views: 3318

I saw something that said that CNW had an isolated yard in South Chicago called Ironwood, I believe. Does UP still have this yard, or has it disappeared either through abandonment or was it absorbed by other carriers?

Tuscola

 by dhaugh ¦  Tue Jul 03, 2007 9:18 am ¦  Forum: Midwestern Railfan ¦  Topic: Tuscola ¦  Replies: 4 ¦  Views: 2532

Made a road trip to various places in Illinois last month, including Tuscola, where the CN main crosses a UP main, and the CSX line to Decatur. It looked like CN possibly was building an overpass over the UP there, although it could've been a road. Does anyone know which it is? Dave

UPS is the single largest railroad customer in the United States.

Thanks - where'd you find that out?

I saw one yesterday - IFRX - that was not on any list I have, nor cuold I get the previously mentioned rrdepot link to work. Anyone know this reporting mark? I tend to jot down the unusual ones I see...

To each his own. I personally loved it, and the character portrayals were the reason behind - not just the trains.

I thought I heard BNSF was in the process of buying some of the South Dakota owned exMilw lines. Don't know if that includes all of the ex mainline. As for what runs there, I've followed it on occasion, and the big trains are the coal trains bound for Big Stone plant near the Minnesota/S. Dakota bor...

Kansas City area

 by dhaugh ¦  Mon Apr 23, 2007 2:51 pm ¦  Forum: Midwestern Railfan ¦  Topic: Kansas City area ¦  Replies: 1 ¦  Views: 2046

I was wondering if there are any good sources for railfanning in the Kansas City area. I've been down there twice & it's absolutely overwhelming. Sure, I found Argentine & Neff, but it'd be nice to have a source that showed tonnage or train frequency on the main lines. Even better would be s...

No, other than driving up to it, I didn't bother with the platform.

Here in Minnesota I watched a hobo run out of a small yard and get on a pggiyback flat toting his guitar. Then I was recently watching a train video on Southern Pacific and a hobo went by, standing up on a flat. Hilarious because the commentator didn't even mention it, whereas everything else was co...

That's more of an answer than I would've dreamed of getting. Thanks a lot. Now, a related question. Assuming I have limited time in this part of Illinois - I am looking at spending some time in a few of these towns - Decatur, which I now know a lot about Effingham Springfield Peoria What in anyone's...

Decatur

What can you tell me about the train volume in Decatur? I know NS has a busy line through town, and I know ADM and Staley both have big complexes there, but what about the other tracks into and through town?

You are correct in that you can't see a lot from the platform. I was kind of disappointed. But then again it would have to be 30 stories high to see the whole thing. IIRC, you can watch one of the humps pretty well from there. If I were you, I'd go there, just because you're going to be that close &...

was Terra, now: SP/UP 'tank train'

Back to the interconnected tank cars - I saw on an SP video, that that's what they used on the 'tank trains' to haul oil in California. Does UP still operate those tank trains?
