Re: Princeton Station (Dinky) Relocation Approved

I also find it ironic that a university, typically a haven to left-leaning individuals, is anti-rail transit, a cause championed by the left. The faculty and, to a lesser extent, the student body may have a number of "left-leaning individuals," but the Princeton University administration ...

Its almost like these stations were built in the early 20th century by competing railroads :P Why is rail transport such a mystery to get right here in the US? So many other countries had competing railroads and now they are integrated into a national system with trains that run on time and systems...

I dont get how university administrators can be so short-sighted when it comes to rail transit. USC and University of Maryland are other examples of schools with strong anti-rail bias even though they greatly serve the students, teachers and staff. I can't speak for USC or UMD, but Princeton (U) de...

That's new, I can't say I ever noticed the "A" designation before. I noticed it back when I started using GCT regularly, in 1986. I'd assumed it was that way when GCT was built, but maybe someone has a copy of the original track & platform layout from 1913 and can speak from knowledge.

MNCR has been looking into NJT multilevels with electric power heads (locomotives) on each side. I'm confused by this. "Locomotives" suggest non-EMU cars with a separate locomotive at one end (or both ends.) "Each side" sounds like motors on the passenger cars. Can anyone explai...

Now you're confronted with two paths: (1) create a better culture of safety and proactivity through training and education; (2) legislation. a. You've left out (3) improved procedures and technology. PTC is an obvious example of improved technology. Improved procedures are what industries do that a...

I also believe both of those [accidents] would be readily prevented by modern train protection systems now in place. Since accidents are fairly rare events, and tend to happen in unforseen ways, it takes a long time to get any kind of confidence that the new systems are effectively preventing (almo...

To be fair a high speed trainset captive to the NEC would eliminate most of the problems with grade crossing accidents, ... You'd have to define the NEC to not include NYP to BOS, or anything south/west of Washington. I'm not sure what grade crossings there are between PHL and Washington. I can't e...

.... The U.S. [crashworthiness] approach is weighted toward crash survivability, as opposed to simply crash avoidance, as in other locales. (I'm assuming "other locales" means basically "Western Europe", and not places like India.) There's a pretty obvious difference between Wes...

Automatic, retractable steps http://www.freeimagehosting.net/t/53cm6.jpg For some reason, those steps don't look as steep as the usual Amfleet or Heritage vestibule steps that I almost tumble down every time I get on or off. The thing that is really needed is a new Hudson River rail crossing, whether it be commuter rail/Amtrak or rapid transit. Unfortunately, a prerequisite for a new crossing is political cooperation between NY and NJ. This is a bigger hurdle than the money, as was shown most recently by the demise of ...

I think we should cut the plaintiff some slack, even if the evidence shows it wasn't racism. If you look at it from the point of view of an African-American (I'm not, and my impression is that few, if any, of the posters in this thread are), it's hard to tell if you are being treated disrespectfully...

As someone who lives in Westchester, near the bridge, I've seen no evidence of any opposition to rail on the bridge. If anything, there's frustration that it isn't in the current plan and fear that Albany will arrange things so that it will be impossible in the future. (Nobody here has any trust tha...

With Cobb wanting to use it,... Not sure what "it" is. If "it" includes MARTA, I would be very surprised to hear of Cobb County wanting "it". I live up in Yankee-land, but my brother lives in Cobb County, and he describes the people there as dead set against having MAR...
