Re: CSX to acquire Pan Am Railways

So, based on PofNY/NJ data, if rail lifts = ~10% of TEUs then Port of Saint John could grow by 2028 to 33,000 annual rail lifts or 90 rail lifts (ie, containers) per day or 45 double stack well cars/day (or a single 2 mile long stack train every 3 days). That's not a lot of traffic for 1 RR let alo...

Well, congratulations on accepting the position. I'm glad that you're enthusiastic, about it. The "I don't think I have much of an option..." and "should I even bother" comments communicated a different vibe, at least to me.

Good luck!

To a certain extent, a CMQ vs IR or MMA is an apples and oranges (lemons?) comparison. As has been pointed out, IRR bought the property on the cheap, and it was a much slimmed-down franchise, given that the former B+A northern lines had been sold to MDOT. The Bangor and Aroostook itself was well man...

I'm going to be brutally honest. You must be a pretty good actor; if even a whiff of what you put in your post came through in an interview, most hiring managers would deep-six your resume. You believe a management training program is essentially the least desirable option in the world, next to work...

Chicago to Detroit is the biggest gap in the CP system. Now with the tunnel in their ownership, going to be interesting... Don't ignore the "obstruction" next to the "gap". The tunnel ownership change provides CP more control over their destiny, but tunnel clearance restrictions...

Depends how you use the word. A "spot" is a position for loading/unloading. In your example, the grain company has one loading spot and the industry's siding and loading capacity is 11 cars (assuming they have a car indexer/mover). The railroad can place or "spot" 11 cars on the ...

Railroad occupancy of the station lasted through at least CP and CAR. Not sure 1) when it was shuttered, or 2) who gave it a hip roof (or why, or when).

Mokanpy, in the original pic, can you read the company name on the building in the background? IRON something or other.

S1f3432, I was going through some of my old slides in an end-of-year clean-up, and came across some pics I had taken in Brownville Jct in 1980. What was really surprising was that a couple of roster shots featured the roundhouse in the background. Not clear if the entire house was remaining or just ...

Can anyone point to a complete listing of high-cube DS clearance restrictions between Barbers and Mattawamkeag? (Or, in its absence, create one?) Curious to know how big a nut this would be to crack. Oh, going back to the IMT... I'm not sufficiently charitable to give MDOT and MPA passes on this one...

Tier II COLA increases are tied to the CPI index used for FICA/Tier I. Specifically, the annual Tier II adjustment is that CPI index multiplied by .325. In other words, the value of your Tier II relative to your cost of living will continue to decline. Be thankful for this era of low inflation; the ...

What were they thinking?
It was an MDOT/MPA project; thinking had nothing to do with it!

I did some amatuer sleuthing (by no means am I an authority on B&M passenger equipment)... the number series indicates these were originally WWII-era, 50' troop sleepers later purchased by B&M and converted to baggage-express service. My guess is that "company ice" more or less a l...

MRJ, you have a valid point about out-of-route miles for ships venturing up the seaway... it's about a 1,000-mile penalty in-and-out on a trip from, say, the Suez with a subsequent call at NYNJ. Ocean miles, however, are cheap relative to terrestrial transport, and the seaway ports are in closer pro...
