Re: Cascade Wreck 18 December 17

Correct me if I'm wrong but I do believe that in Cab signal territory, a signal can be displayed to show a more restrictive aspect to protect a curve if it is wired that way, likewise, from what I have seen on the LIRR, there are signals as well that will display a clear even though there is a speed...

I think we will be hearing more about the training process and if the crews had adequate time qualifying on a new territory. I had testing with Amtrak several years back and I was a little surprised that it wasn't more intense. There are differences I would believe in that process if you are working...

It is unfortunate what it is turning out to be, that the train was indeed traveling at a high rate of speed in an area where the speed restriction was at 35MPH. NTSB will look into why the train was at this speed, and if defective equipment contributed to it or if it was due to human error. One thin...

I don't like to speculate on things that haven't been investigated yet, but this accident has similarities to train 188 in Philly, and even more similar to the derailment of a Spanish high speed train in Galicia some years back which involved Talgo built passenger cars. By looking at the aerial shot...

I think that a one seat ride into the city from JFK is not really the most feasible solution, especially after AirTrain came to play. While I seriously still feel that the reopening of the Rockaway Beach Line is necessary, especially when one considers that the line is still mostly intact, I think t...

Typically, passenger cars, (both electric and bilevel) will be taken to the HSF and brought inside for inspection, especially now that we are in winter. Regards to bumper blocks, especially at locations such as Atlantic Terminal and Port Washington or Long Beach, the purpose is to stop the train fro...

flexliner Ah... you touched on an issue that is to be known as the big can of worms that was opened. That was an excellent question. Is it discrimination? Interested to see how this plays out both in rail and trucking sectors. What happens then to an engineer that falls into my category? I have inso...

I like the presentation, and given Miami's lack of interest on mass transit, this is a very nice step in the right direction. I am still very disappointed with the lack of expansion west. I lived in Miami for a number of years, and we all know that he population has mushroomed west of 826 like weeds...

As I mentioned already before, the easiest solution at the moment is to get the conductor to be in the cab when entering the terminal, maybe Atlantic terminal, Port Washington, Far Rock and Long Beach to be in specific where the line ends at a bumper block. In all of these stations, the brakeman can...

Re: Evacuation of FLL airport onto tracks

I question it because a family friend was in terminal 1 at the time and was one of the people who were evacuated onto the tracks. He, because of the things that he knew of my days working on the trains, felt it to be a bad idea for people to be on those tracks. needless to say, he text me and asked ...

yes, sorry about the Pilot's tube, but it was around 3am. Unfortunately, yes, there can be an "over diagnosis" of sleep apnea, and if you add in the word "politics" to the mix, you see where this is going. I for one do suffer from some type of sleep disorder, where I can't fall a...

Evacuation of FLL airport onto tracks

When I saw the evacuation of FLL airport on TV the other day, I was very shocked to see so many people having been evacuated onto the FEC tracks east of the airport perimeter. Brings me to question whether law enforcement communicated with FEC about an evacuation onto their tracks or was it assumed ...

I am glad that someone mentioned above Airbus and their technological aircrafts and how there have been accidents attributed by crews over-riding what has been built into these aircrafts. Those not familiar with this, in short, Airbus has added all the bells and whistles to their airplanes to "...

I can bet that the NTSB is gonna start looking more at the floors of these M-7s and other passenger cars to see how they handle punctures. I find it very alarming that that both the MNR Valhalla accident and this one involve rail piercing the bottom of the train into the passenger compartment. Lets ...

The only "silver lining" I see in this is that with a considerable amount of attention being applied to sleep apnea and the profession of Engineer, that employees will be given more options for treatment. As has been with my personal experience, while most insurances cover CPAP as treatmen...
