Apart from Ring's End in Bethel, what other freight customers are left on the Danbury Branch?
841 (I think) facing south on train #6849 this evening. The P40's apparently don't fit too well in the EB pocket track at South Norwalk- only one door on the platform & they had to hold the WB express for the passengers off the Danbury. Anyone know why they're not using the WB pocket since the w...
The first time I went on the (then Guilford) website I thought I was in the wrong place. They had two "system maps": one of the B&M and one of the MEC. All well and good: but the MEC map was from 1916 and the B&M map was dated 1898(!). Delusions of grandeur, perhaps?
In terms of getting more bang for the buck: what about running MN Hartford-New York through service via Waterbury and the Highland through New Britain and Bristol? Would increase NY-HFD service, AND might be easier to pitch to the General Assembly (I'm assuming state funding) as it would cut congest...
Hah! Thank you- that's the first genuine laugh I've had all week.
I've fond childhood memories of the SPV2000's on the Danbury; the "Amtrak Budd Cars" as we called them seemed a substantial upgrade from mechanically-iffy RDC's...
Seriously, why none of these critters on the Danbury? 2k+ hp and they can't accelerate out of Branchville?
Caught the (8/29 only) 3:15 Danbury express today. The car I was in-- the first open car-- had more passengers in it after South Norwalk than it did departing GCT. Passengers boarding at Merritt 7 just about equaled those detraining. I'm blown away by the change in the traffic pattern on this railro...
Wire was down South Norwalk through somewhere past Noroton Heights last night. Wire train (or something: was dark) was working on the Track 3 side; 6561 came in 20+ minutes late on the EB side (to general confusion) and then made Darien & Noroton Hgts on the bridgeplates-- 2 (2 only) at each sta...
Danbury branch is single-track, unsignaled. Meet sidings at Wilton and Branchville (don't know the line well north of Branchville- is Bethel Lower long gone, anyone?) Not sure of the speed limit but would be surprised if it were 70. Given the population density of the towns along the line, the (to b...
What is the purpose of the construction going on near the old Dock yard in South Norwalk? Looks as if someone (developer?) is building a new underpass beneath the Danbury branch. If so- anyone know how many tracks the new span is going to carry?
Rebuilding the Westchester, Otto? Seriously, though: my impression was that PSNY service on Metro-North would be more for the benefit of the East Bronx-- and Pelham Manor-- than as a through route from the Hudson/Harlem to LI. Can't say I've ever taken the #6 all the way to Pelham Bay Park, b...
Slightly off-topic, but does anyone know when Topstone was discontinued as a station? Also, judging by the catenary structures at that crossing, it looks like there was a siding at one point-- did that go away when the station was closed?
Gents- I think the real purpose of extending service to New Milford would be to provide service for people commuting from lower Litchfield/upper Fairfield to the Stamford/Greenwich area. Anecdotally, a lot of these guys are now driving to Bethel-- not Danbury-- or driving all the way.
