Hmmmmm, all this makes me wonder, once they dig the canal deeper and build the locks for much bigger ships will that railroads traffic decline to nothing? Or will they still need it to lighten up even bigger ships?

I see what you mean now Dutchrailnut. You meant take 600 containers "off" the ship to lighten it. I was confused by your typo.

Since nobody has bothered to reply, my guess of rivited steel is based on the relatively quick replacement of wooden freight car designs with 'riveted' steel designs (excluding special cases like Ice Reefers for insulation, or Vinegar Cars to prevent the acid from reacting w/ the metal, or composit...

Not sure what you mean?

My company just received 3 containers from japan and they came via rail to Worcester. Sounds like you might have a prime example. Where did the container ship drop them off and where did they get trucked to from Worcester? What was in them if I may ask? Where they 20 foot, 40 foot, 48 foot or 53 fo...

I know Intermodal containers are put on ships in China and Japan and then brought to the USA someplace where they are likely put on container cars and then trucks at some point. But to get to New England does that container ship drop them off on the West Coast someplace and then container trains tak...

Looks like except for the part where the pipeline is going, the 3rd track just needs ballasting tamping and regulating. They began replacing ties on what's left of the spur to the factory too.

Interesting things are happening in the West Upton yard now. They are fixing up the rest of the yard track they have yet to fix up although they have still yet to touch the spur to the factory. They also did something else I'm trying to figure out. There is a place with a short section of all 3 trac...

Really don't think so, looks like they are concentrating on current customers.

Good news, a serious amount of work was done today. Looks like they completely dug out and rebuilt the Glen Ave crossing today, when I arrived the roadblocks on each end of the street were still up but it was finished, the pavement was still very warm. Most of the MOW was there and just north of Gle...

The ones all along the mainline going North? Well, they LOOK brand new. Pretty good shape for used. Wow they must have just put those out. They already replaced several of the ties by the crossing, some of the rail is removed and the pavement cut, like they are going to rebuild it very soon....

I noticed something interesting yesterday, just north of the West Upton yard there are even more ties marked for replacement, including one of the ones they just put in several months back. I noticed last weekend that North of the yard there are bundles of NEW ties sitting out waiting to go in. Tho...

I was just wondering what's easier to do in the long run (in the north)? Replace rotted wood, or sandblast the rust that keeps coming back between the riveted steel?

At least that is one new customer. Is the pellet operation owned by the G&U or unrelated? I need to explore more of the line. unrelated, in case you didn't know the G & U already has been bringing tank cars to West Upton but that looks like it's not even going to be a dozen a year. This Pel...
