Re: MEC spur in Brewer

It's not a spur; it just looks like one. There once was, as noted, a spur near the river bridge on the Bucksport Branch that went into a mill yard on the river, but it was a bit farther down the hill (quite near the railroad crossing). It's long gone, but you can see the roadbed as you look a...

Regarding that sign: The next thing you know, they'll be saying that the B&M used to own the baked bean factory in Portland.

I think of the dozens of those covered truss bridges that used to be on the B&M when I was a kid back in the '50s and '60s, and am amazed that they're so rare today.

I spent the first 25 years of my life in Worcester County, go back there often, and have never been able to figure out why Thomas Street (around the west side of the reservoir) is not designated as Route 140 rather than Beaman Street on the other side. It doesn't make sense to me --- it's the direct...

A railfan friend told me a few months ago that he had heard the pending move to Gray was on hold because of opposition from, or problems with, the town. Can someone reliably confirm or deny that?

Just wondering if there have been any further developments since I inquired about this two and a half years ago. I haven't been to the Beauce area in quite some time; is the railroad active through there at all?

Train, Tractor Trailer Crash near Danforth, ME

An Eastern Maine Railway freight train collided with a logging truck, causing an explosion at the Route 1 crossing in Eaton, near Danforth, late Wednesday. No one was significantly injured, but the police and DOT had to close the highway for most of the night --- a major inconvenience for drivers, a...

Bless Buckland! I think it's about time this issue of dumped ties is addressed. PanAm (Guilford) has been doing this for the past thirty-plus years. As noted, the ties are not only a hazard in a variety of ways; they also indicate that this is a railroad that doesn't mind doing things in a slovenly ...

The old Athol roundhouse of the Boston & Albany's Athol Branch is still standing. The branch was abandoned in 1935 at the time of the construction of the Quabbin Reservoir. Curiously, a quarter-mile or so of the rails are still there, long dormant, heading toward the Athol depot which the line s...

There is a filled-in turntable pit in Bingham, Maine, that served the old Somerset Branch of the MEC. The line was abandoned in 1979. After the abandonment, the fire department filled the pit with water early each winter so that it could be used as a skating rink. It didn't turn out to be successful...

There is only one available online USGS map depicting the old Reformatory Branch when it still existed (the Framingham Quadrangle, 1894). The western terminus of the line is just beyond the parameters of the map. Did it actually join the New Haven's Framingham and Lowell Branch, or did it end where ...

Looks like we have our answer! While we're on this subject, can anyone tell us when the semaphores were replaced with color lights?

Yep, it's a map of Athol, but the railroad photo is of Athol Junction in Springfield. I know the area this map depicts. As you look at it, the directions are reversed: the top is south, the bottom north, the left east, the right west. The tracks of the old B&A branch to Springfield are on the to...

Sorry, Pat; I don't agree. If it's Athol, what is the track coming in from the right at an angle? Assuming that the B&A yard and roundhouse (which I visited two years ago --- it's used as a storage barn) are on the left, that means we are looking west. There was no branch line coming into that a...

This photo appeared on eBay yesterday. Supposedly it depicts a spot on the B&M's Fitchburg Division in Athol, Mass. I'm from that area. It's not Athol, and two Athol friends confirmed that this morning. So . . . let the sleuthing start! (The picture has been sold, by the way.) http://www.ebay.co...
