STrRedWolf For context, the Franconia-Springfield VRE station has tracks on both sides of a two track line. Lorton's VRE station is on the eastern-most side. The bridge will let VRE and Amtrak switch sides so it doesn't stop traffic having to service from the wrong side. Oh, and they're going to pu...

That MetroForward video clip has got to be a joke. It should not take 5 seconds between the birthing of the train at the platform and opening the doors. The whole process should take no more then 2 seconds. That being said, that 10 second differences totals up to a 7 1/2 minutes shorter terminal to ...

west point Good point! Since the 3rd and 4th tracks will be laid on "VIRGIN" ground the underground utilities will have to be located. Why not go ahead and pothole the caissons for the CAT poles? As well support holders on the bridge itself. Those will reduce track absolute work windows f...

jamoldover What about the opposite option - partially or fully decking over an existing above ground yard? That would be a lot less expensive than digging underneath an existing yard, and wouldn't require any new real estate either. It's not like the trains can't run under cover.... The yard that a...

The station at the Laurel Park is a holdover from when the Baltimore & Ohio provided passenger service to the track on race days. The Pennsylvania Rail also did the same at Bowie Race Course.

JDC John, as always your knowledge is immense! I had a follow up question that occurred to me as I was riding the Silver Line yesterday past the tracks that lead to the Dulles railyard. Of the existing Metro railyards, which ones have the room to expand? I assume Dulles because it's surrounded by n...

JDC post_id=1626542 time=1690722951 user_id=271975 John - do the WMATA railyards even have the capacity to store enough trains? I know the new railyard at Dulles is very, very large, but would it (or the other yards) have enough capacity to satisfy any of these build options? Or, would these build ...

JDC He makes good points, though what Adam misses in claiming his proposal adds only a minimal extra cost is that it would require yet more rolling stock. Which is a good thing. But his design calling for 26 trains per hour instead of 13 on the as-designed Blue line loop should take into account th...

Third part of Adam Bressler series at Greater Greater Washington:

The Blue Line Loop is flawed. Here’s how to improve it.

I hope the suits at WMATA are taking a serious look at this.

STrRedWolf I'm with you, but I would think DHS would demand pushing the Union Station to Capitol South out so it hits Eastern Market instead via 8th Street, then take South Carolina Ave SE to hit Navy Yard. I don't see this as being an issue. I also think there would be a connection between the Blu...

TheOneKEA Where's Sand Box John! I am Here. Using A tunnel boring machine will be a given. It should be noted that three different segments of the system made use of tunnel boring machines The Red line between Rock Creek Park and Pooks Hill Road made use of a hard rock tunnel boring machine. Pressu...

west point 30 year rail replaced? Sounds fishy. What is the million gross ton miles on this rail. Freight RRs probably get more out of their rail Isn't the standard about 20 MGTs on curve rail for freight? Freight carriers don't use rail that is as light as the rail WMATA uses. The rail in question...

A simple solution would be to not bother with enforcing fare evasion using the fare evasion law.

Charge the fare evader with trespassing. Law enforcement would give the suspected fare evader 3 option. pay the fare, leave the station or get arrested charged and booked for trespassing.

justalurker66 Has WMATA ever permanently closed a Metro station? The answer to that question is no. I will note that Arlington Cemetery is the only station that closes earlier then the rest of stations in the system , 7:00 PM from October 1 to March 31 and 10:00 PM from April 1 to September 30. It ...

RayT https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anacostia_Line and despite like 50 million and buying it was never finished. Any idea where the cars are ? Any hope for progress on this in my lifetime? The 3 Czech Streetcars were eventually shipped to the United States via the Port of Baltimore. They were stored...
