Re: "The Interborough Express" FKA TriBoro on the Bay Ridge Branch ROW

If this doesn't end up in the "great idea box in the sky," one really has to wonder what type of entity would run it? My money for any advancement would be on a light rail system like NJT maybe not even manned by MTA personnel? Think the NICE Nassau County bus system that was spun off by t...

That was really for mainline operations heading over grade crossings. If it was a "yard goat" spending life in terminals or secondary trackage they wouldn't really be required.

Carloads of Brick on NY&Atlantic

Does NYA still receive any carloads of actual bricks for Kings Material or Glenwood Mason?

This used to be a pretty substantial operation for both Arch St in LIC and also JJT had a transload in 65st when the yard was reopened taking boxcars of brick in the team yard.

Funny thing the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey that was one of the main reasons it was created for a freight tunnel between NY and NJ. Here we are almost 100 years later.

I think that interlocking was redone only like 15 years back. I'm assuming that was the last set of new position light signals that went up on LIRR? It's a shame you know the subway tri-color light style signals will be replacing those.

Steve, I could be wrong but I dont think that building was there before 2007 ESA projects starting? 21-16 Jackson Ave is the old freight headquarters on the right( Blue shack lol). A freight consignee told me years back he would walk in there and ask where his cars were for the team yard( tracks in ...

Some of the escalator steps are already being replaced on the long ones that lead down to the train caverns. They seem to be made of some composite plastic material. It doesn't seem like they build stuff to last today. Maybe if you fall down 150 feet it won't hurt as much until you hit the bottom.

I read somewhere that a trip from Jamaica -> NYC Penn takes 20 mins A scheduled trip from Jamaica -> NYC GCT is supposed to take 28 mins Probably because of the curves vs the relatively straight shot through East River tunnels and having to divert at the interlockings to head Northwest A trip on th...

I think that is correct about WATCO moving the cars at both Waste Management terminals in Brooklyn and Queens. Fly ash is also a byproduct of when trash is incinerated. I think the Brookhaven Rail Terminal was supposed to have a fly ash move that didn't pan out. Good to see something else going on n...

Another 10 billion thrown into the pot for the MTA via the infrastructure bill. There will probably more capital work on MTA now. I’d like to see if they do the more extensive repair work how Amtrak wanted to do it in the East River tunnels from Sandy damage. Cuomo wanted a less intense weekend outa...

We've kind off went off topic, but is the electrification of the central branch on hold now even with the 14 billion dollar federal injection? I know it was mentioned in the upcoming MTA capital plan, but that was pre-Covid.

I think the great Plandemic gave them a little breathing room. You probably needed 3(mainline) tracks even for service into Penn Station before March of 2020. Funny thing everyone complains about being crammed into Penn Station. The ceilings are probably lower on the Madison Ave concourse of GCT tha...

#1583453 by photobug56 Wed Oct 27, 2021 1:32 am One seat ride for riders on C3 cars with DE's / DM's is impossible because when those were ordered, they were specced a few inches too tall to fit the East River tunnel to be used by ESA. LIRR officials told me that face to face in 1996 - before any of...

I believe there are a total of eight platform tracks on two levels. Sounds a little bigger than Atlantic Terminal. I'm not sure. I believe it stubs out into 8 yard tracks? How much stuff could you really turn at the height of rush hour 6am-9am and then fleet back north/east on two mainline tracks?

K&K, Were you at the LIRR when Richard Ravitch tried to pull the LIRR out of the RLA in 1981? He was head of the MTA and I believe the arguments were it's not a common carrier and more like a subway system? The LIRR unions fought back and won the case. They tried the same thing I believe 15 year...
