From MaineDOT: The Maine Department of Transportation and CSX are working to make safety improvements and improve track conditions at a railroad crossing on Route 4 in North Berwick. This project will result in a safer crossing for vehicles; it will also allow the Downeaster to travel at increased s...

Neat! The power unit has a single EMD Blomberg truck — and probably a pair of EMD traction motors.

Why are they converting from coal, which is domestically produced, to "liquid fuel" which is usually imported ... Most of the diesel fuel and home heating oil we get in the northeast US is sourced from either North Dakota or Canada. Aside from the initial conversion cost, I would imagine ...

The $800 million price tag is a great example of what happens when you kick the can down the road for years or decades. If NH had done this 20 years ago or even 10 years ago, the price would have been less than half the price being discussed today.

According to the Maine weather report I watched at noon today, the hurricane itself is now predicted to just graze the very easternmost tip of Downeast Maine near the New Brunswick border; however, most of southern and central Maine is still predicted to get wind in the 40 to 60 MPH range, so fallen...

Those must be the ex-NOPB, exx-NS Dash 8-40Cs that were recently for sale, and are now listed as sold. Externally they are in very rough shape. Hopefully they run better than they look.

According to someone I know who is a reliable and credible source, the Amtrak employees who operate the Downeaster are disappointed that NNEPRA chose not to accept Amtrak's offer of sending Horizon cars up here. The primary reason for their disappointment, according to my source, is that the Amfleet...

Getting nothing by rail right now doesn't mean they won't need to get things by rail in the future. If you think a defense giant like General Dynamics would just shrug and say "oh well" to a proposal to rip up their access to the national rail network, you are underestimating how much clou...

People can push, but they won't get very far. There are strategic and national security reasons for the Rockland Branch to remain open as a railroad.

Once the plant has completely shut down — and assuming that another company doesn't buy it and restart it — there could potentially be at least a year of additional freight business for the Rockland Branch in the form of scrap metal, C&D, and "dirty dirt," as was the case when Maine Ya...
