I think they are used in California for commuter service, so if this is true then they have already been certified by the FRA. Nope. The Sprinter trains have a waiver from the FRA that allows them to operate a separate times from freight trains (freights run only at night on that line, when there's...

I thought that Guilford (Pan Am) abandoned the tracks because they never bothered to take care of them, and the state of NH took over from Milford north. Then when the tracks were repaired (not by Pan Am) they were used to haul gravel. Now Pan Am want to run the gravel trains and will increase the ...

When I've biked near the Millis-Needham line, it all looks fairly unusable, though I could be wrong. If the line through Sherborn, i.e. the Framingham Secondary, is 2.1 miles away, that's an awfully long way to hear the sound of jointed rail. I don't think the clicking is very loud, and even in fav...

I wonder why the T doesn't look into something like this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:5022007_graz.jpg The Desiro units are extremely popular in Europe. They have fast acceleration and are built to the latest safety standards. I think they are used in California for commuter service, so if thi...

In B&M days, IIRC, the curve at Bradford was a 35MPH speed restriction. So I'm correct in my speed at 30, I'll bring it up on curve to 35. I tried 40 and 45 and it was a bit "scary", meaning I felt like the train was going to derail. What was the speed on the bridge many years ago? I ...

Athearn, or maybe atlas, I don't remember...was selling PAR and B&M painted boxes a few years back. The PAR blue and the B&M blue were either th same color or so close I couldn't tell them apart. I don't know if that was modeling license or accurate representations. I've never seen a good B...

I think Pan Am is going to live on; the NS partnership is working, if not smoothly and not to expectations, yet, and they do a healthy business through CSX at Worcester. They may downsize in the future if their traffic base in Maine continues to shrink, but they aren't anywhere near collapse, IMHO....

Back to the bridge between Bradford and Haverhill... I don't think the railroads could possibly operate any faster over the bridge than possible 20 mph if they're lucky. The curve on the Bradford side, I think puts the clinker in this. It's a pretty tight curve, and any train operating through the c...

Re: How does catenary wear out? Can't we use PRR/NH catenary

You'd have to think it wears out like anything else that's constantly under friction. This is not much different than the older hard drives that had the wiper that pressed against the bushing on the bottom of the hard disk, or even motor brushes, or, perhaps pick-up shoes for third-rail work. Eventu...

One of the V-scale modelers has made one of these for N3V Trainz. I've been wondering, though. It seems that everything the New Haven owned that wasn't conventional, suffered some kind of mechanical problems. Could this have been the way their shops were? The people running the shops couldn't handle...

I'm sorry to read about it. But not surprised. It really seemed like there was this feeling of inevitablity that the E line was going to be cut back to Heath Street Loop. But it made me wonder if Green Line service could have been restored to Arborway on a route other than South Huntington Ave, Cen...

Where's The Tap?! In Haverhill along Washington Street. It overlooks the Merrimack River and you can see the rail bridge. It's a nice way to rail fan. Sit and relax while sipping a beer or two while eating a meal or snacks. :) I've been watching the progress from RT 495 on my way to work. They've b...
