Cab Ride

 by jp1822 ¦  Mon May 03, 2004 9:05 pm ¦  Forum: Amtrak ¦  Topic: Savannah, GA Station ¦  Replies: 26 ¦  Views: 11273

Good grief - will be sure to write down the cab fare on my next trip so I can report back. My standard for tipping cab drivers is typically between 15% and 20%. At 7 miles, cab fare (including tip) would be about $16 with NYC fares. So yes, it does appear I am a little off with the $8 cab fare. Sorry!

Savannah, Ga Station

There was a downtown Savannah station, although I doubt Amtrak ever used it. It now serves as the Savannah Visitor Center. Originally built by the Georgia Central RR. Part (but not all) of the original access to the station is blocked by a townhouse development. Next to the station is a very old rou...

NJT Concourse

"That having been said, reading the comments in this thread causes me to wonder how many of you have actually been in the current version of Penn Station. The LIRR concourse was handsomely rebuilt in the 1990s, and while still crowded, now probably does a better job of serving LIRR riders than ...

LSL New Summer Schedule

 by jp1822 ¦  Tue Apr 27, 2004 2:00 am ¦  Forum: Amtrak ¦  Topic: Lake Shore Limited - New Schedule ¦  Replies: 61 ¦  Views: 16808

So why is the new LSL westbound schedule faster (arriving into Chicago at 8:55 a.m. as opposed to 9:20 a.m.) and the eastbound LSL is arriving into NYP about an hour later (after factoring in a new 7:20 p.m. departure out of Chicago)? It appears the eastbound train is adding time to the schedule in ...

Lost Stations

Are there any historians out there? No idea on dates, but the PRR used to have a station at Monmouth Junction and I think one other area between what are now Jersey Ave. and Princeton Junction train stations. Hopefully the Monmouth Junction (South Brunswick) station will return with the installation...

Achieving Maximum Speeds

Nick - that's exactly what it was - a Keystone train. There was a Keystone train that departed NYP bound for Philly/Harrisburg between 4 and 5 p.m. that used an ALP46 a few months ago. I also remember a discussion on how the ALP46's were not maintaining the Keystone schedule (losing time). I realize...

The eastbound and westbound departures between Chicago and New York Penn are my least favorite of all the schedules Amtrak had in place between these two cities. Course the 12:15 p.m. eastbound departure of the Lake Shore Limited was the worst. I favored the early evening departure and mid-day arriv...

Silver Service

I agree that they should have added a sleeper temporarily to the Palmetto. I picked up the new timetable today and there appears to be lots of trackwork going on this summer - or at least more than what is typically published. In the timetable it states that schedules for these three trains (Palmett...

Penn Station 4/19/2004

My NJT train got into NYP at 8:20 a.m. and the first thing I saw when I came up to the Amtrak concourse was one fireman. I found that to be very odd. Then as I walked towards the LIRR concourse, I saw police, fireman and medic workers all over the place. I assumed the worst and instantly thought ter...
