Re: Uganda Railways - Metre Gauge

In the early colonial period there was a need to connect Uganda to the rest of the world. That was achieved by the steamer service to Port Bell and the short rail connections to Kampala itself. But with the direct rail connections via Eldoret the steamer was more expensive, requiring two additional ...

I have been enjoying Adrian Garner's book "Monorails of the 19th Century." I discovered that the first rail link between what was at the time Port Kampala and Kampala itself was a monorail! Rolling stock was propelled along the line by bullocks rather than any form of mechanical propulsio...

News reports are that he left his train at the frontier and proceeded from there to Hanoi by road. I speculate that perhaps the standard gauge track to Hanoi is not up to carrying his heavy train.

No question--people have to see it and ride it before they have any idea what it's really like. The problem seems to be how to get at least one up and running. That is why it is so disappointing that the California high speed line is in trouble. I think if it actually got built it would be a succes...

700 miles at 150mph would be a modern train. Think how many people would prefer it to travelling by polluting aircraft or road transport.

You have 2 choices: A. Take a flight; involving waiting hours at airports, stuffing yourself into a cramped 737 (or smaller), and have your legs go numb. or B. Take a HSR train. May take a bit longer, but you'll be able to stick your feet up on cushy seats and see the scenery go by. I know what one...

Unlike most countries in Europe what the US lacks is trains with SPEED. If you had some fast trains people would use them and there would be continual demand for more. I have travelled by quite a few trains in America, such as New York to Chicago. They really are too slow. Quite pleasant but not att...

I suspect he has a rather heavy train and not all tracks may be fit to receive it. There may well be a Standard Gauge track to Hanoi, but is it strong enough to suit his train?

What many people never seem to get is that high-speed rail dramatically increases demand between the cities it connects; existing travel demand becomes almost irrelevant. Paris-Lyon before and after TGV is a typical example. I have little idea of what Americans think about High Speed Rail. As they ...

NOW we're told, 77 billion dollars committed and years late, for a slow train to.. nowhere! Sam My impression was that the planned line was to be a modern High Speed rail line, something quite common in Europe, where rail engineering has developed steadily. In America rail practice has not develope...

I think the political situation in Britain is becoming more complex. Nine Labour MPs have resigned from the party and now sit as Independents. Three Tories also have left their party and sit with the same group. There are rumoured to be several others thinking of changing. It seems still possible th...

Are there any other examples of abandoned High Speed Rail? In Europe quite the reverse: high speed lines increase steadily. However, the proposed line from London to Birmingham is being criticised as being too expensive and may possibly be abandoned before building has got under way. The arguments a...

Interesting,George . Any idea how the hydrogen is sourced, or generated. All I know is what is in the link. If they are using commercially available hydrogen I assume it would be from fossil fuels or nuclear electricity. But potentially it could be from solar, wind or other renewables - not carbon ...
