Re: Lake Shore Limited EB (#48)

So 48 gets the diner (not 448) but they don't serve dinner? There are several reasons for this, I'm sure. IIRC, Boston no longer has the capability of servicing a full dining car. The LSL train set rotates with the SILVER/CRESCENT train sets out of NYP in order to "thaw out" the equipment...

Anyone happen to know what meals are served on this train? 9:30p is a little late for dinner, and 6:35p is somewhat early for dinner. Thanks for the help. On my last trip on #48, there was a wine/cheese tasting service just prior to the departure from Chicago, but dinner was not served. (There are ...

In 1972 (or was it 1973), I recall seeing an 18 car BROADWAY LIMITED (flooding re-route, both the NYP and WAS parts of the train) sitting on track 34 at GCT. (The NATIONAL LIMITED was on track 35.) The entire consist just barely fit; the 2 T-motors were beyond the platform. Curious about that. Wher...

I have a related question-- The 20th Century Limited was 12-14 cars long, judging from films that exist. Are tracks 34 and 35 long enough to hold the entire consist? Or was the train split and joined together just before departure? In 1972 (or was it 1973), I recall seeing an 18 car BROADWAY LIMITE...

The Pennsylvania had cars in the CREEK series which had two double bedrooms at each end, over the trucks, and between the trucks there were 14 Duplex Single Rooms with transverse berths, similar to those on the Northern Pacific as described above by Scoring Guy, except that they were staggered on t...

PC did pick up a couple of ex-D&RGW full lounge cars, and used these as the coach lounge on the BROADWAY LIMITED. IIRC, these did not have the standard "tall" windows common to the ex-C&O PS builds, while their diner-lounges, coaches and sleepers had the "tall" windows.

Sometime around 1972-1973, AMTRAK acquired several ex-US ARMY baggage and hospital cars (I believe from the Judge Roy Hofheinz collection). The hospital cars were mostly converted to bistro lounge cars, and operated out of New York (mostly) on the Florida trains, as well as the Broadway Limited and ...

And bus service is/would be much quicker. That's why California has never place a high priority on extending any of the San Joaquins to Los Angeles. Note that I didn't say Los Angeles ... I said Barstow. Connecting to #3/4 from/to Chicago. As I understand it, the bottleneck is freight to/from the L...

Maybe this fits the topic, maybe not. This would probably need to be a California initiative too. Extend a San Joaquin from Bakersfield to Barstow to connect with #3/4. Through cars a possibility? This would open up the valley to various southwest destinations. This would be close to the old San Fra...

The SOUTHERN CRESCENT always operated combined with a Boston-Washington corridor train under AMTRAK. That train carried a parlor car and a diner-lounge (customary in the early days). An occasional exception occurred when the northbound was running late, but not too late to wait to be combined with t...

Seattle to New York on 8 and 48

A recent business trip took me west to Seattle. I flew out (the less said the better) and rode the rails home. Below is a short synopsis of my experience. (BTW ... I've been riding the rails since 1967; so, I'm not a newcomer to this experience.) Empire Builder – Amtrak #8 – Seattle-Chicago – Friday...

Did it fit on one platform track in GCT? I rode the CENTURY in both directions in August 1967, a few months before the end. In both directions, the (non-specific) consist was: 1 CUT motor 1 RPO 1 Baggage Dormitory 3 coaches 2 sleepercoaches (16-10) 1 lounge/kitchen 1 dining room (twin unit with abo...

When the 20th Century Limited arrived in GCT, what tracks did it generally use? Where were the cars serviced, there in GCT? Did it fit on one platform track in GCT? At least in the later days of the Century, the train always left from track 34. (The WOLVERINE left shortly after the CENTURY, and usu...

Station in Deerfield Illinois

A question about the Deerfield (Illinois) station - currently METRA's. At least in the 1950s, the Official Guide shows that Deerfield was a stop for many long distance passenger trains, and Glenview was not. The first question is, when did this change, and why? Secondly, the main waiting room/ticket...

Strangely, there's some information on the 1938 Century, but very little on the 1948 Century. A 1938 Century would be laid out as follows: Railway Post Office Club/Lounge (1) 10 Rmt - 5 DBR Sleeper (2) 17 Rmt Sleeper(s) (2) 10 Rmt - 5 DBR Sleeper(s) (1) 4 Cmpt - 4 DBR - 2 DR Sleeper (2) Dining Cars ...
