Re: Cape Flyer Discussion

Two factors may have hurt ridership this year, the higher fare and the length of the Friday night trip. I think it would be a big improvement if the Friday night train was not a continuation of train #021 that makes a lot of stops before it even gets onto Mass Coastal territory.

Preliminary reports put the ridership at 15,000 passengers, about 1,000 less than last year. Keep in mind that it was a shorter season and the service generated $200,000 in only 14 weeks. Not too shabby.

One reason for the rather low number of passengers is a lot of people had already left the Cape during last week. Many schools opened early due to Labor Day being so early this year. Overall, the total number of passengers will probably be less than last year, yet still more than enough to keep the ...

Great numbers. The 1053 died on it's way to Boston last night and was replaced by the 1065 this morning.

There is no money for this project!!! CDOT is spending every cent getting their tracks back up to normal speeds and now they're saddled with replacing the drawbridges. Retrofitting M8 coaches into bar cars is (or should be) way down on their list of projects.

M8's have not been tested on the shoreline due to their not meeting Amtrak specifications (voltage transition, ACCESS compatibility & clearances). Rumor has it testing on the shoreline will happen "soon".

Can't imagine CDOT coming up with the money for what clearly is a luxury for a few passengers.

Geesh. We've seen that engine enough times!!

MN crews are on the NJT equipment for requalifying runs from Penn Station to New Rochelle for the next couple of weeks.

This AM's (8/16/14) Flyer consist had only 8 cars and the 1119 (N) and 010 (S). The 1711 had been removed. Having a train with 9 cars and two engines would have been impossible to store in Hyannis yard and allow the scenic trains to access the yard.

Replacing (or restoring) a bike trail with a railroad on the Cape will never happen. The amount of support for bike trails is incredible and politically connected. Even a vague idea of sharing a roadbed with trains and bike has almost no chance of happening. You have to live here on the Cape to unde...

I don't think the Cape Flyer will be extended to Columbus Day again this year. After labor Day last year the ridership dropped sharply. Most times the Friday night train to Hyannis had less than 20 people on board. Keeping the Flyer profitable is essential and running past the summer season puts it ...

Portchester is slated to have an elevator installed. But just when that will happen is anyone's guess.
