It was a very late SU-100; by me at 0550 hrs. Also, running one day later than normal; Sunday night/Monday morning SU-100 thrashed a traction motor west of Port Jervis that threw the schedule off by a day. (The info was on the NYS&W Facebook page, but buried in the usual juvenile blather there.)
Sad news to report; I received a phone call Tuesday morning informing me that W. Gifford Moore had passed away on Monday, August 28, 2017. Gif was the last President of the Lehigh and Hudson River Railway, and was the person most responsible for the L&HR's inclusion in Conrail. A good man, and a...
Those are set-off tracks, not a crossing diamond. No railroad crossed the U&D here.
Erie East Buffalo tower was IQ. Perhaps printed reversed?
This 1892 'Bird's Eye' view of Caledonia (along with probably hundreds of others) is available online at the Library of Congress site; zoomable, and downloadable.

With the exception of State highways, the County is responsible for all bridges (an arrangement that goes back decades); as such they are responsible for the detour. Bringing connecting streets (Orchard Street) up to standards is the responsibility of the Village. As for crossing protection, since a...
Definitely for a new crossing. There's been some coverage in the local papers, also info at Village board meeting agendas and minutes. The latest legal notice concerning part of the process, from late last month:
Nice, indeed. Wish I'd known about it back in '68 (if it was there then- I assume yes). Spent nine months at Ft. Monmouth, stationed there in the Army's Signal School, just inside the west gate. About every other weekend I would catch a bus for the city at the gate- about a block away.
This a longstanding issue. The Howe Street/River Street bridge has been condemned for several years; the County first put a one-lane restriction on it, then set a 22 ton limit (the rationale was that Jones' trucks were only on the bridge a few axles at a time). Its replacement has been in the works ...
Don't think so. Monday's (11-7) SU-99 didn't stop at Warwick, and there hasn't been a 99 since, account of trackwork. I *THINK* the M&NJ pulled it back north late Tuesday evening- caught a glimpse of them on Railroad Avenue about 20:30, and it looked like 773 on the tail end with its nose-mounte...
Apparently the detector has been activated- today's SU-100, 0450 hrs, 2 Nov 2016. MP 84.3- I didn't hear the whole audio, but it included axle count and temperature.
That's the father; just checked, and he is on Facebook (as John C Durant). He was also posting on Railfan.net forums, but not for years.
Father, or son? The son is on Facebook, not sure about the father; I haven't heard anything from him in several years.
New defect detector, maybe? Something new happened with tonight's SU-99; I'm about a mile from that location, and heard a talking DED on 160.485 that I've never heard before. It ID'd itself as MP 63.6, which is Sparta, but the timing was right for Pelton, given when the 99 passed by me. Sounds like ...
