Wrong on both counts, Otto, The LAL is owned by 12 shareholders, none of whom live in Geneseo -- and, to my knowledge, none are RIT grads (although my son went there as did Kevin McGarvey, our late CMO. A First rate school.

When Conrail was created, the former Erie route between Youngstown and Hornell was superfluous. It duplicated shorter and better maintained routes. Except for the refinery at Rouseville, PA (reached from Meadville) there were no significant local customers on the former Erie - and the former NYC to ...

After the suspension of through trains on the Hornell to Meadville section of the former Erie-Lackawanna, the DOD asked Conrail to reopen the route to handle a couple military equipment trains (high-wides) destined for the Military Ocean Terminal at Bayonne, NJ. This move was in connection with Oper...

The previous poster is correct. A hitch in the military will provide a headstart in the railroad hiring process. Railroads like people who are disciplined and used to following orders, who understand what a rule book is, and who are ready to go on duty 24-7. The military also provides young men and ...

The building shown in your pictures is the Dansville station. It was the headquarters of the Dansville & Mount Morris RR, which was owned by the Hart family. I remember calling on GM Bob Hart there in the 1960's.

In connection with S4ny's comment above regarding derailers, that scene is based on something that occurred in the "real" 8888 runaway on CSX in Ohio. CSX actually used derailers in an attempt to stop their out-of-control train -- and like the scene in the movie, the power blasted right th...

Yes, a runaway could, and did start in the way described in the movie. The script for "Unstoppable" is loosely (very loosely) based on an incident that occurred in CSX's Stanley Yard, Walbridge, OH on May 15, 2001. The engineer of SSD-45-2 No. 8888 (think 777 in the movie) left his cab to ...

The "boxcar" was a movie prop made of wood and fiberglass. It was designed not to give serious resistance to the 777. CP wouldn't have liked it if Fox really derailed and smashed up their $2 million GE's. Hey, this is Hollywood , where "28 year "veteran" engineers step on ra...

The scenes showing Denzel Washington and Chris Pine in the cab of 1206 were shot in a piece of movie apparatus that is called in Hollywood parlance, a "buck". It was actually a former SD-40 that had been gutted of its prime mover and adapted with removable side extensions that allowed the ...
