They also did it in Philadelphia on double track, here's Rte. 59 on May 8, 1950 after the trolleys were cut back to Cottman Ave. on April 18, 1948. At least 2 cars tried to continue to Bustleton in about 2 years! https://www.phillyhistory.org/PhotoArchive/Detail.aspx?assetId=123862 The pole and roof...

TAN: Back when oil was getting expensive, train crews were paid by the mile, and highways were restricted to 55 miles per hour, some railroads tried to be patriotic and save fuel by imposing a maximum of 40 miles per hour for their freight trains. They soon made an exception that downhill with the t...

If you can believe Amtrak.com, out of 11 Southbound trains from Albany-Rensselaer, NY to Penn Station, New York City on 7/10/23, only 5 were cancelled.

Somewhere I read that Amtrak at its startup used some Sleeping Cars with a few Sections, and reserved those spaces for crew use only, instead of providing a Dormitory car.

I rode PennCentral's Federal out of Boston on the night of Apr. 4, 1971 in a tuscan red Pennsylvania RR Roomette & Bedroom Sleeper. There was no New Haven RR Sleeper in that particular train. A fellow passenger explained to this youngster that the shiny metal insulated bottle on a shelf was for ...

I observed from I-81 a “President Joe Biden” Expressway. Who knows what else they have named for him. Formerly the Central Scranton Expressway; built partially upon a former interurban rail route, namely the Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley (commonly called the “Laurel Line”). Built over one portal ...

In the 1980s, the Eastern Region General Managers' Agreement was mainly a cooperative reciprocal emergency help plan priced at about average cost with overhead, but no profit, included in the prices. Amtrak would pay the same price to borrow a freight road's locomotive or crane and crew as the other...

Hurricane Agnes in 1972 damaged the line both North and South of New Freedom. The last freight cars returned from the Stewartstown RR to New Freedom were removed by PennCentral after the storm on highway trucks.

The very 1st time I rode Acela 1st Class, very early in this Century, the entire frozen platter was run through the microwave, including the roll, wrapped pat of butter, and wrapped chocolate bar dessert. The last 2 were served in a semi-liquid state. If an electric oven had been used, I'm sure the ...

For some years, railroads, and trains, tickets through New York and/or Washington (and maybe other stations where many trains terminated) on through trains were priced higher than the sum of the local fares, possibly so those through passengers could make a lower density coach pay its way.

Almost 2 or 3 times as fast as Amtrak between Orlando and West Palm Beach.

Is the new line to Orlando's McCoy airport completed enough to the existing Florida East Coast mainline to allow transferring of equipment? Some of the 2nd order of new passenger trains were delivered by CSXT to Orlando instead of Jacksonville, probably because the new line wasn't finished. Who will...

Annual Reports to stockholders (remember them?) may disclose these details. Ater Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Norfolk Southern reported a storm damage loss before insurance started to cover of $25 million. There will probably be a footnote in the 2023 Annual Report warning about potential unknown lose...
