Re: CSX to acquire Pan Am Railways

CP is clearly going to be the big loser with this acquisition as their manifest traffic is going to get brutalized. Not only do they lose all the CSX interchange traffic, but eventually, a lot of shippers currently using the NS, will switch to CSX served receivers, suppliers, transloaders , warehou...

Internet calculator says it is about 1350nm for the sea route between SJ and Montreal. All the way around NB and NS and then the long haul down the st Lawrence River. Assuming about 20 knots, that’s 3 days Looking at the Hapag-Lloyd route listing on their website, a ship docking on Thursday in Sain...

... I showed her some photos of BNSF Container trains out West, and I said, "just one of those engines has more power in it than any electric locomotive has". Except the Siemens Vectron (and its predecessor, the Eurosprinter) is offered with either 7000 or 8600 HP. The GE Evolution locomo...

BTW - NS, BNSF, and CSX's dream lists are now available on the STB website, with Executive Summaries available on the Trains Magazine Newswire. Interesting that CSX now wants access to the Meridian Speedway.

I was under the impression that CN was out of the running for a KCS merger. Am I wrong about that? Or am I "wrong" about that? CN just wants divestiture of the old Gateway Western to be a condition of the merger. What I don't understand about this is does CN expect the STB to impose Gatew...

The never aging secret to better fuel mileage on a vehicle is putting it in neutral going downhill; regardless of fuel or transmission type. No idea why railroad locomotives waste energy on dynamic braking going downhill when they could just pop it into neutral and let gravity do the work: faster a...

Transport Canada is proposing a PTC type system for Canadian railways which they are calling ETC "Enhanced Train Control" . The regulation would feature two levels of system, with the lower level providing driver advisories of the Track and Signal condition ahead. The higher level system w...

The Mississippi River bridge isn't the only big old bridge on the route. The Missouri River bridge at Glasgow also features many very old through truss spans, and it has trestle spans on both ends, some of which had to be replaced after the last big Missouri River flood event in 1993. At the time Ga...

Only a handful of cars being interchanged w/ CSX in St. Louis surprises me. I would have thought, pure guessing no data, some of the value of the line to KCS is being their only access to CSX outside of New Orleans. You must have missed my post of February 2nd. M-VNKC video from last fall had 43 we...

Mr. Norman the former Gateway Western now owned by KCS is a mixture of FRA Class 2 and Class 3 track with some slow orders. The bridge across the Mississippi River at Louisiana, MO was built in 1897 - 1898 originally consisting of 8 through Pratt truss spans of varying lengths, plus the cantilever t...

Regarding CN acquiring the former Gateway Western, potential traffic over the line would mostly originate on current CN lines, and I think CN would struggle with severe traffic imbalance, loads west, empties east. BNSF, UP, and CP will not solicit traffic for interchange at KC with CN. So CN will li...

The hydrogen fuel would likely be stored in a separate tender like the LNG tenders used on the FEC.

This may come to pass, but I think the most likely scenario in 2027 is for FXE to gain access to Nuevo Laredo from Monterrey over KCSdeM and possibly Matamoros (Brownsville).
