Thank you for the correction. Had recall that the LA&L passenger service was to end in 1976 account probems finding proper insurance. My photo notes stated that the last train was on 31 Oct. 1976. Had no mention of LA&L passenger service in my files for 1977. Now that you mentioned it, I do recall that service was to start up in 1977 but never got down to Livonia to confirm it. Do you happen to recall the date of the final trip?
I don't know the specific date of the final trip but I recall it was in the early fall (September or October) when my family found out because school had started. I asked my parents if we could go on a fall foliage trip. They agreed it was a good idea so my mother called LAL... only to get the bad news excursion service had recently ended for good.

My last trip on the LAL was in during the summer... because I remember seeing swimmers in the pond along the ROW.

BTW, I still have an old, red LAL excursion brochure in my RR memorabilia.

Matt:

Thanks. I had one of the origional posters for the LA&L excursion service. It was tacked up on the wall of the antique shop that is (or was?) at Ashantee. I asked what they wanted for it and the owner simply gave it to me. Still have two LA&L passenger service time tables. One features no. 17 and the other no. 38.

The Knox&Kane RR engine house in Kane, PA was broken into and burglarized. When all said and done, it was set a blaze. The engine house was giving shelter to ex-WM GP9 #39, KKRR 2-8-2 #58 (Tang Shan *sp), and a 19th century coach, and finally former LAL #38 Baldwin 2-8-0. The newspaper article is claiming the fire as a $1 million loss.

The site evidently doesn't have an auto photo sizer. The photo on RP. has the whole loco and tender, and the front of the long hood of the Geep in it.

I noticed that too a while ago. Need to right click on the picture and then click on 'view image' to see the whole picture. Hope this helps.

Isn't there a thread, maybe on the NY State forum about an auction for all of the K & K equipments? If so, any one knows who bought #38 and the plans for it?

There was, but it takes you to the one that was started in the PA theard. 5 or 6 down from the top. The auction is this coming weekend. I have heard that a local RR is "interested" in one of the steamers.

Nice pics. I'd much rather see the old girl in the condition in your pics vs. mine. On the ones of the hopper drag, was that a true freight run, or photo freight?

Thanks for sharing those pictures!!
It was neat to see it at the engine house. Sooo many details!! Two red bldgs are now gone but what were they for? (I know next to the red structure by the engine house is a home so access was either from the road front or the engine 'yard'?? Or shoehorned between the house and the red bldg??
The piping--water stand??
Love the make shift work bench and those 'oil' drums. Forgotten they were a common sight all over the place at one time..........
Thanks again for the memory trip!!

The 38 was in route from LA&L to the Gettysburg RR and was being shipped dead. It was not pulling the hoppers. Looks neat though.

Note the lack of bell and headlight on #38, plus kids on the pilot and security stationed in the cab.

Just checked the website for defunct Rail City museum, where #38 came from. Apparently, #38 is credited with powering the last steam passenger run in New York State. A couple photos sprinkled around the website (maintained by Dr. Groman's son) show the original tender.

Luther Brefo wrote:Can she be repaired? Well I suppose anything can be repaired, it's an issue of cost I would imagine. Who wants her?
I'm sure this is far from a news flash by now, but I forgot about this thread until I was digging in my hard drive (see below.) Anyway, Alan Maples purchased #38, and she is currently under restoration.

...See below:
On Sept 23, 2006, the Knox and Kane sold rides to those at the Marienville
Oktoberfest. The trips ran from the Marienville Station to McCray Siding and
back. They were powered by #39 which shoved open car #604 and coach #7031, and
pulled them back. I was scheduled to work 7AM that day, until 7AM the next day
for EMS in Marienville. I did some "railfanning" on the clock, lol. Now the
dilema, I want to ride! I can't hardly be on the train clear up at McCrays, and
get called out. I call my Supervisor, and he says that I can take a few hours
off IF I can find someone to cover for me. We have a couple of other EMTs that
live in town. I call one, and he says that he will cover for me. I call my
wife and tell her to get her butt up there to ride what could be one of the last
rides out of Marienville with me. She gets there, and we just miss a departure.
Little do we know that the next ride, the one that we get on, will be THE LAST
trip out of Marienville.

Also that day, Sloan Cornell handed his roundhouse keys over to a small group of
very
appreciative railfans. I was looking
through my hard drive, and decided that the photos from inside the roundhouse
were not doing any good just collecting dust on my computer. I placed them in
my RRPA account to share:
