Even without delving into the complexities of terminal trackage in Chicago and St. Louis, there are many of these. In addition to the several noted above, I'd include:

1) The C&O of Indiana, route of the "Cardinal" for about seven years in the 1970s/early 1980s. Train ran via the C&WI from 35th Street, Chicago to State Line Tower, over a portion of the E-L to Griffith, thence C&O. Most of the route is now abandoned.

2) The "North Coast Limited" route via Butte. From Whitehall to Butte the track is out of service, although there is talk about re-activating it.

3) The Illinois Central Grenada District is still in service, but slated for abandonment. The City of NO was re-routed about a decade ago via the Yazoo District.

4) The Pittsburgh & Western (CSX) from Pitts. to New Castle. Several years ago, the "Three Rivers" was re-routed via the then-Conrail Youngstown Line.

In terminal areas, the Cardinal now runs via the Grand Trunk from Munster to Thornton Jct., thence via UP past Yard Center and on the former C&WI to Union Station. Amtrak trains to St. Louis now use MacArthur Bridge, although the option to use Merchants Bridge still exists. Eads Bridge is now a light rail line.

In the Cincinnati area, the Cardinal now uses the former B&O between Indianapolis and Cincinnati.
