Greetings all from a new member in Australia.

Could someone please enlighten me about the following ?

Just watched a short Youtube show and read an article on the C&O Allegheny boiler explosion of 1953.

I have not seen a satisfactory explanation as to why the fusible plugs didn't melt and extinguish the fire.

Any ideas ?
Cheers,
Dennis

I know it is from the other site but the last post on this thread references the incident you were talking about. https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/ ... 10,4268414

I have also seen people post that the water level indicator on this locomotive was not cleaned out prior to the run not allowing the fireman to be able to gauge water level. I am unsure if the Allegheny had the fusible plug as it was more common on Canadian locomotives. Either way it seemed the locomotive was end of life and poorly maintained which led to the catastrophic incident.
