Connecticut – Saugatuck River Bridge Replacement (Up to $23,200,000)

The proposed project includes project development to replace the existing Saugatuck River Bridge over the Saugatuck River in Westport, CT. The span is a 118-year-old, 485-foot, four-track, moveable bascule bridge. The project will involve alternatives development and preliminary engineering stages of the project. The project would benefit Amtrak’s intercity services, MetroNorth Railroad commuter services, and freight operations. As matching funds, Connecticut will provide $4,234,000 and Amtrak will provide $1,566,000.

Rehabilitation of Westport's Saugatuck Bridge, expected to cost $4M, should start in fall 2025

WESTPORT — The Saugatuck River Railroad Bridge rehabilitation project is moving forward, with work slated to start in fall 2025 and run through spring 2026.

The project, expected to cost $4 million and be entirely state-funded, aims to rehabilitate mechanical and electrical systems of the moveable bridge, which carries four tracks of the Metro North over the Saugatuck River.

The existing mechanical and electrical system do not provide reliable operation of the lift bridge span, Minturn said. The project also aims to extend the bridge's life by providing safe and reliable operation of the lift span until the 120-year-old bridge can one day be replaced.
