It was before 1960 that the inner tracks through (the old) Haymarket were severed and a portion covered over so riders could walk between inbound and outbound outer tracks. This also permitted a single fare collector to handle both sides at station level.

North of the (old) Haymarket platforms, cars/trains crossed over to/from the inner tracks (for the surface loop, last called Canal St. Loop) . South of Haymarket cars could cross over for inner tracks for Brattle Loop. I do not recall any revenue service on Brattle Loop in the 1960s and 1970s. There have been sporadic Lechmere-Brattle shuttles in later years, using the straight part of the Govt. Ctr. platform on the northbound side..
