It has been confusing as South Shore Allows bikes on at some stations but not off at other stations and customer service is less the helpfull. Planning on trip to Portage IN and on to Michigan City which for some odd reason does not alow bikes

The reason is that because the stations that they only allow bikes at are High-Level platform stations they will not let bikes allow to board and deboard at Low-level platform stations because only certain doors are used at low-level stations where high-level stations all doors including the center doors on the single level trains will open.

Plus right now because of the double track project bikes are only allowed between East Chicago and Downtown Chicago for the time being as Gary Metro is a Low-Level platform Station and East Chicago is a High-Level platform station. Trains only operate between Gary and Chicago and Michigan City and South Bend and in between is replaced by shuttle buses and bikes are not allowed on the shuttle buses and trains between Michigan City and South Bend.

Per the https://www.mysouthshoreline.com/ website, bikes on trains will end on Monday, October 31st. The program only runs April-October and (as noted) is limited to high platform stations where the center doors of the special bike carrying cars can open and (as noted for construction) was limited this year to stations west of and including East Chicago. (East Chicago is the last station with a high platform west of Gary - all trains are being bused east of Gary to Michigan City with separate trains running from Michigan City to South Bend.)

Portage is low platform (but is getting a high platform next year). Ogden Dunes is the most popular high platform stop for bikes. The new Michigan City 11th St station will be getting high platforms when it reopens. So even before construction both Portage and Michigan City would be no go for bikes. Check back in 2024.

:-( I could use a lawyer here...My take on this is that South Shore is being run by white suberban racists who dont want reverce hispanic commuters riding the South Shore to jobs in " there Suburbs" no other commuter rail system has this problem in the United States...But here we are in Indiana the Offcial headquarters of the KKK and the Arian Nation. There are plenty of jobs in NW Indiana but no Transit Bus Service from Hammond IN to Gary To Portage to South Bend. You would expect that every town along the South Shore would have some sort of local city bus connection.
