Metro is seeking a buyer for its headquarters in Washington DC above the Red Line.
It has been determined that is more feasible to move into a new building rather than renovate the 42 year old building.

Transit agency officials believe the process would save more than $130 million in operating and capital expenses over the next two decades. The Jackson Graham building is in urgent need of costly plumbing, heating, air conditioning and electrical repairs. The building is also no longer in compliance with current fire codes and Americans With Disabilities Act standards.

The sale is further complicated because the building is connected to critical subterranean Metro infrastructure. The property features air shafts that provide ventilation to the Red Line tunnel, and the building has huge industrial chillers on the roof that pump in cool air to the Gallery Place, Judiciary Square and Archives-Navy Memorial stations. There is a direct exit from the Red Line tunnel into the building.

Will the new building be able to accommodate the money train or did they solve that problem separately?

Revenue collection is preformed at Alexandria Yard. Its been done there sense the early 1980s.

WMATA is almost returning to the scene of the crime. Prior to occupying the Jackson Graham Building, WMATA's offices were in 950 L'Enfant Plaza.

As currently constructed, the new building is about 30 percent smaller than JGB, and Metro expects that some functions currently operating out of JGB will be shifted to Metro's new sites in Maryland and Virginia as part of the office consolidation plan.

So much for consolidation..

From 10 office buildings to 7? That’s a much larger & more top-heavy workforce than I expected. That isn’t so bad if it counts the various offices at the yards, but I don’t read it that way.

The office building that Metro will move into is near VRE's L'Enfant Plaza station and Metro's underground station is also nearby.
The building will soon be renovated

Overhead views, with and without Metro lines. I think it’s a great location and hope WMATA moves forward with the building remodel. (That would also be an excellent time to add an island platform for VRE L’Enfant, while Virginia Avenue is probably going to be closed for construction staging.)

Looks like there could be, but does anyone know for certain if there is direct access from the Reporters Building to L’Enfant Metro?

No direct access. The south and west sides of the property abut the L’Enfant Plaza station underground easement. A connection to the east entrance passageway could be made from the south side of the property.

Me thinks the only connections will be conduits for the SONET fiber for the client server computer networks and relocation of the backup rail and bus operation control centers.

VRE is planning to widen the L'Enfant Plaza as it can only accommodate 5 cars. They want to have wide enough for 8 car trains - but that will be several years before completion.
