Does anyone know the history if the little NEMCO switcher at the New England Milling (now Horizon Milling) complex in Ayer MA? It is an elusive engine, always either blocked from view, seemingly missing, or out in the open in the rain so I can't get a good photo of it.

Also, what is its exact function? Does it switch the other sidings in the loop?

It was rumored to be an ex NYO&W, EMD NW-2 one of three NYO&W NW-2's in existence. It was talked about on the oldest version of railroad.net under the NYOW forum, but I don't remember if anyone verified its heritage.

NEMCO NW2 1000 is:

Ex-Conrail 9274, PC 8698, NYC 955, nee-NYO&W 130

It arrived at NEMCO 6/02/85, replacing a leased GE 44 Tonner.

The NEMCO's NW2 sole purpose is to work for the plant itself.
They shuffle around loads of wheat, empties for loading of flour and then put them in position for a local crew to pick-up. They are not a railroad crew, so they are neither qualified nor allowed to touch the other customers cars within the loop.

The NYC roadnumber for this unit should be 9515, NOT 955 as originally
posted...

BTW, BN: 6162 Built: 7/48

I finally got to see this little guy in action recently. It both pushed and pulled grain hoppers in one action around the NEMCO loop of track. Sounds neat and looks ratty but interesting.

Are you saying it was built for Burlington Northern, or NYO&W?

In this case, "BN" means Builders Number, not Burlington Northern.
