Did the prr excavate any land for material to build up the track bed and embankments in nj? I've notced what look like "borrow pits" near the row in new jersey especially between pjct and new Brunswick. If these are not borrow pits, where did the earth come from to build up the embankments??

There were several clay pits in the area, Woodbridge Center Mall is located on the site of a former clay pit. I used to work at a truck yard in Keasbey which was originally a terra cotta production site. It was excavated to supply clay to the foundations of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and partially re-filled...
