Does anyone know where I could find a D&H roster for the time period between Guilford and CP? I'm curious as to what locos Guilford returned/gave to D&H when they dumped them off in the late 80s, and then what CP inherited in the early 90s. Thanks!

I think that a few 5000 series, and the 7300 series. I don't know when the 7400 class went to CSX, or about the C420s. What about the C425ms that ended up back with Guilford, in the early 90s?

C420s left in 1987. The former GP39-2s went to CSX roughly 1991. ex-LV 316 was wrecked in 1988, and left the roster. Was in Guilford paint, not sure what number it carried at the time. I think only the remaining GP38-2s stayed with the line - the GP39s were used to repay CSX horsepower hours. The 7600s stayed with Guilford as MEC units and ended up being sold to the UP. The U23Bs were transferred to the MEC, and I think Guilford kept the used ex-CR GEs that were bought in the mid-80s too.

A handful of RS11s and RS36s remained also, including 5002, 5017, 5019, and at least two more - I have some distant shots of them parked in East Binghamton around 1992. The latter two still exist; the others were scrapped by a loco dealer (who sold used parts from them).

How does that work? Was CSX power used on the D&H?

After being cast off by Guilford, with the NYS&W as designated operator, they used whatever they could get their hands on. CSX even financed an order of B40-8s which came painted NYS&W - only 4 of them stayed on the NYS&W after the D&H was awarded to CP Rail. Seems to me the others were numbered 4010 to 4040, (even numbers only), maybe higher. Look in some of the period magazines.

NYSW 4010 - 4048, (even numbers only) - Twenty B40-8's, were built in 1989 and financed with help from CSX to operate the stack trains.
(Susquehanna was temporarily operating the D&H, and the stack trains were run over the Conrail southern tier main via D&H traffic rights)
With the loss of the stack trains when CP took over the D&H, these 20 units were returned to CSX around 1991.
4010 - 4048 only operated with NYSW a few short years between 1989 and 1991.

The other four B40-8's 4002, 4004, 4006 and 4008, operated with NYSW all through the 1990's and into the 21st
century, until being sold to the P&W in 2004 and 2005.

4006 (now P&W 4003) was in NYSW yellowjacket paint in July 2006, was repainted into P&W scheme by December 2006.
was the last B40-8 to wear yellowjacket paint.

One thing I left out is the C424m units. 451-456 and 461-463. Rebuilt from former Conrail (RDG, EL) units by GE-Hornell. The latter group was financed by G&W to ensure power for salt trains, and went to them when the D&H was put into bankruptcy (one of them was wrecked when kids let some frieght cars run away). The others were in tough shape - only one or two serviceable - and they were actually returned back to Guilford. I'm not sure what games they played with financing or transfering power, it was like Guilford tried to stick them with more junk and the people in charge of the D&H said thanks, but no thanks. After that, they were to be ST 70-75, but most of them never ran for Guilford, only one or two was renumbered. I believe four of them were sold to the LA&L and one scrapped. Of those 4, two are operational (one lettered Bath & Hammondsport), two are stored.

As a side note, the LA&L reunited these with some other graduates of the same Hornell rebuild program, three rough ex-GBW units, one of which was the only PRR C424.

Also, at the same time these units were originally picked up, one or two of the L&HR C420s were also rebuilt and went to the D&H, but those all left the roster in 1987.

Ex-Lehigh Valley Railroad GP38-2 No. 316 (re-numbered D&H 7316) was not wrecked in 1988 per post by lvrr325 10-10-08. This unit was wrecked at SW Cabin on 07 December 1983. It was subsequently shipped to Colonie and stored there, finally winding up at CP's Ogden Shops on 23 March 1992 on D&H flat car 16505 minus pilot, engine, main generator and traction motors. Believe that the unit remains were thereafter scrapped by CP after being stripped of usable parts. Also, it was never in Guilford paint and carried the number 7316 until the end.

Additionally, not all the other ex-LVRR GP38-2 units stayed with the line. Unit 7321 (ex-LVRR 321), which had been renumbered 227, was wrecked at Elnora, NY 04/89 and thereafter shipped to M-K at Mountaintop, PA. for parts. On 30 November 1991 the unit was shipped on three flat cars to CP's Angus Shops, then shipped from Angus to Ogden Shops for scrapping and parts salvage, arriving at Ogden on D&H cars 16143 and 16144 on 23 March 1992.

All of the ex-LVRR ALCO C420 units were acquired by Delaware-Maryland-Virginia Co. in March, 1987.

Those units were renumbered to 7300s, renumbered back to 300s, renumbered back to 7300s, no time except the first in consecutive order. It could be the unit wrecked in 1989 is the one I am thinking of. I'm also going by old Railpace caption info, so....

I did see one or the other of those two go north in ... 1990 I think. I had driven to Walkill to sell some parts to a guy and came back by way of Binghamton and happened to drive by Bevier Street to see what I could see. So I caught a northbound just after dark, I remember at least one of the PLM units on the point.. and at the tail of the train is this GP38 on a flatcar, it's trucks on another flatcar behind it. The upper cab was gone; it was in worn D&H lightning stripe paint (which I think makes it actually the 316) and the pilot may have been gone too. It was probably enroute to Colonie. (I also think this train had at least one of the CP Rail big Alcos on it, too).

lvrr:

D&H 7316 never received a lightning stripe paint job and was in D&H blue & yellow at the time it was wrecked. In addition, it was never renumbered to the 200 (not 300) series.

D&H 7321 was renumbered 227. Notes do not reveal if it was in the lightning stripe scheme prior to being wrecked, however.

Some of the ex-LVRR GP38-2 units were renumbered three times: 7300-series to 200-series back to 7300-series (but not the same 7300 number as before). PM me for this info should you care to.

CP 5420, 21, and 23 were other D&H SD40-2s besides the ones listed in the second to last post. Even though they were painted for CP, the FRA blue cards said that they were owned and operated by the D&H. I think that some 8200 series GP9s were D&H units too. I never worked the switch engines in Binghamton. Some of the SW units may have been D&H too. I was just never on any, in order to examine the blue cards.
