The repair barn for the #3 line is at New Lots ( Livonia ) yard. The #4 line provides Lexington Ave service 24/7 while the #2 line does the same on Seventh Ave. The #3 and #5 are now considered supplementary lines and as such do not run 24/7 although the # 5 does run a 5 stop shuttle on the midnights. The two stop # 3 shuttle was eliminated a while back. It's easier to extend the # 4 to New Lots on the midnights than to add a full length # 3 line. This is why the "C" doesn't run all night. As to switching terminals during the day time the #4 runs more trains to provide service on the crowded Lexington Ave corridor so you have to have a shorter run to keep more trains in the central business district. That's the TA's way of thinking anyway.
