It said in the story that it was the West Roxbury branch and that the Dedham branch split off at Readville?
The "Dedham loop" ran from Readville to Dedham, turning north and connecting with today's Needham line around Temple Street in West Roxbury. Wikipedia has
a page on the Dedham branch. The
NHRHTA Shoreliner magazine also had a 12-page article about the "Dedham Loop" back in 1997 (Volume 18 Issue 1).
Another example of a Boston-area steam railroad commuter loop is the New York Central/Boston & Albany's Highland branch, now the D branch of the Green Line.
