Over the past several years there's been talk of light rail lines within DC. First was in Anacostia, which, I understand, so far has gone nowhere. Then I recall reading about something into NE DC -- possibly from Union Station, although I don't recall. Is anything happening on this second project?

Anything and everything concerning light rail in Washington DC can be had at http://www.dctransitfuture.com/ or more specifically at http://www.dctransitfuture.com/corridors/. Variations of four of the routes on that map appeared in WMATA’s Transit Service Expansion Plan published in April of 1999. Tenley Circle Georgetown Fort Lincoln, Silver Spring Navy Yard, Adams Morgan Minnesota Avenue.

I was at Anacostia Metro station a couple of days ago. A quick walk over to the ex-B&O line showed no activity. This explains it, I think: http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/spec ... l1125.html and also http://www.dctransitfuture.com/demos/anacostia/ in spite of this in 2004: http://www.dctransitfuture.com/demos/an ... news_key=2!

when the new light rail comes into dc will the control system be integrated into the heavy metrorail system?

Being that the light rail lines will be operated in a different operational environment on a physical plant that is completely separate from the existing heavy rail transit system, the likely answer is no. Supervisory control will likely be intergraded into a common facility. Train control and signaling will likely be configured and design to fit the operational environment.

WMATA could use some components that are the same as existing heavy rail transit signaling system hardware for train detection. Whether that will actually be done I don't know.
