While driving past Valley Stream station at approx. 7 PM saw numerous fire trucks at the station, with an (I believe) westbound M-7 from the West Hemptstead branch idleing (outside lights were on) and firemen all around it. Any info on the situation?

Hmmm; last evening around that time I heard the female engineer of the West Hempstead train making repeated reports to 204 about not being able to draw power. They thought it was a problem with the master-controller. I wonder if something more serious finally happened to the train when it got to Valley Stream. On the other hand the FD might have just been there for a tie fire, or something like that.

A tie that is so deteriorated that it causes to smolder from sparks, is a tie that needs replacement anyway.
