I posted this here because the Midwest thread is a bit quiet and we've got an interesting Chicago operation in question.

Today, the Calumet Harbor is served by CSS, NS, and CRL. According to the linked photographer, C&NW had an operation there once, isolated ten miles south of any other C&NW operations (they're not a south side railroad). Anybody know about this? Is this a misunderstanding?

Nope. Totally legit. The road built a large grain terminal down there that eventually got sold to Cargill. If you dig around in flickr, there's some pics taken down in that area, but nobody went down there much to chase it. I've never heard the back story of why North Western made the investment down there or why it made sense as a disconnected operation. Obviously, at some point it didn't fit into the company or UP would still own it.
