The P&W actually built the NEC between Providence and Pawtucket in 1847, and sold a one-half interest to the Boston and Providence Railroad in 1853. I assume they don't still have their remaining half interest, so when did they get rid of it?
Under the New Haven Railroad Northup Avenue Yard sat in the middle with main tracks 2 and 4 on one side and main tracks
1 and 3 on the other side. Early in the Penn Central scheme, track 4 became track 2 and track 2 became track 1 and was
signaled for operation in both directions. Also at that time tracks 1 and 3 became yard tracks and the story was that they
were to be considered as part of the Providence and Worcester so your statement may have merit but Amtrak surely owns
the tracks that they are operating over with the NEC passenger trains.
